About this listen
This is the second of the three-part series covering the opening salvo of the Great Martian Invasion. US forces recover from the initial shock of the Martian invasion of the Southwest and attempt to set up a defensive line along the Mississippi. The best minds in the US try to come up with ways to defeat the Martians using the little captured technology available to them. Meanwhile, President Roosevelt tries to rally world leaders to aid in stopping the invaders.
©2016 Scott Washburn (P)2017 Scott WashburnThere were several things I enjoyed through-out the book, and being back with Telsa is one of them, he's such a quirky character and he's fun to follow. The build up of the Martians to humans in the first book aided here, because I thought that the balance now from the human side starts to make us wonder if and who is in the right. I'm not sure.
The action scenes in here will knock your socks off there's a great sense of humour from the characters as they discover what the weapons can do for them, and I my fav scene involves a ray gun, I mean who hasn't pretended to use one of these when rpg'ing as a kid! My fav show was V and ray guns were it.
The author nailed the continued story ideas I'm sure of HG Wells, and where they could have gone, this is an excellent series and I really look forward to more.
Ray, performs as great as ever, his deeper tone to his voice adds in a rustic olde world quality which matches the original tone to how War of the Wolds might have been. A great performance, and excellent writing. I look forward to the final part in this series, (had to go make sure there really was a book 3, is there? hope so! ) :)

Breakthrough continues the story of an alternative history, of the world of 1909 fighting for survival against their formidable attackers, an account which began in the book, Invasion. Following the lives and creative processes of fictional and historic characters, such as Roosevelt, Edison and Tesla, the action is fast, creative and has a realistic feel as new weapons, good and not so effective, are invented and thrown at the Invaders. Cleverly, the point of view, whilst mainly from the perspective of the defenders, is also given periodically from that of the Martians themselves, and their problems and fears, which takes the book beyond the simple "YeeHa!" of success.
Ray Greenley's narration helps carry the whole book forward clearly and with alacrity. His pleasant voice is well modulated, carrying conviction and understanding of the text. His voicings of the various protagonists, human and Martian, is more distinctive than in the first book and each feels appropriate and distinctive: the slightly mechanical Martian conversations are especially well done. The narration definitely adds depth to the story.
Overall, an enjoyable story and, unusually, better than the first in the series. Good fun (especially the portraits of the non fictional characters) as well as a good action thriller. Recommended to all Science fiction fans, especially those with a slight steam punk bent.
