About this listen

From the critically acclaimed author of Hekla’s Children comes a dark and haunting tale of an ancient cult wreaking bloody havoc on the modern world.

Struggling with the effects of early onset dementia, Dennie Keeling now leads a quiet life. Her husband is dead, her children are grown, and her best friend, Sarah, was convicted of murdering her abusive husband. After Sarah’s tragic death in prison, Dennie has found solace in her allotment, and all she wants is to be left to tend it in peace. Life remains quiet for 12 years, until three strangers take on a nearby plot and Dennie starts to notice unnatural things. Shadowy figures prowl at night; plants flower well before their time. And then Sarah appears, bringing dire warnings and vanishing after daubing symbols on the walls in Dennie’s own blood.

Dennie soon realizes that she is face-to-face with an ancient evil - but with her dementia steadily growing worse, who is going to believe her?

This is the fifth book I have read of James Brogdan and each of them superb. This was a dark but rivetting read. Would definitely recommend.

Genius and captivating

I have to say I think The Plague Stones is the best so far (I’ve also listened to Hekla’s Children).

Narration of this one is good as all of them have been. I do feel the blurb misrepresents this book though - the story entwines around itself, back and forth, but there is a whole other side to it that makes up over 50% of the story and this has no mention whatsoever. Since the book opens from this point of view, I did initially spend the first several chapters wondering if I was listening to the right book!

Lovely writing as usual, I do enjoy the flow of the words and turns of phrases used.

Still a good book, but…

This guy knows hie to keep you enthralled ftom start to finish. From a seemingly simple start in WW1 to contemporary times, with all sorts in the middle. Highly recommended.

Another Cracking Yarn…!

really disturbing but like rubber necking an RTA, you can help but look. More times than I expected my teeth itched but stick with it its not a listen that I will forget in the fog of my 3 to 4 audible books a week.

almost didn't continue reading as the first part was pretty graphically gory - WWI trenches. however, once the story gets going it's a great plot. I've read a couple of books by the same author before and really enjoyed them, the stories are always very different.

for a lot of this book I found I preferred the 'baddies' but it gets to a tipping point at which you suddenly support the 'goodies'!

available as a book included in the plus catalogue I highly recommend a listen. I've already started listening to 'the hollow tree' also by James brogden.

stick with it - it's worth it!

There are a few glitches in the recording itself, but otherwise a great read. Definitely chilling.

I was looking forward to this book after thoroughly enjoying the first two I listened to by james Brogden, but tbh I struggled to get into this story at first and I very nearly gave up on it. I persevered, and it did pick up a bit. The narration was not great. I found it slow, boring, and somewhat disjointed at times, as though the narrator was struggling to get the words out. The accents, too, were pretty bad. I sometimes struggled to know who was saying what during a conversation as they would all blend together somehow and sound the same. When Denny and David were chatting, for example, I lost track of who was meant to be speaking.

I think it would have been much more enjoyable with a different narrator.
