About this listen

The moor is darkening. Lorne feels it in his bones.

His instincts, honed by years on the battlefields of the desert, scream in warning. Or is it the monster in his head?

When Detective Inspector Tony Shaw tells him the obvious occult symbols on the dead man are nothing more than faked staging, Lorne knows his instincts are right, and the police are wrong. There is darkness, and it’s spreading.

An ancient spirit line is awoken with violence and pain, seeping down from Dunkery Beacon, highest point on Exmoor, to the woodland church of Culbone on the coast.

Lorne Turner, SAS soldier and survivalist trainer, turns to his best friend, Ella Morgan, vicar of the parish, for help. Together, they approach Willow Hunter, a pagan whose past impacts all their futures.

Time is against them as they battle the unseen forces of Somerset’s aristocracy and the mysteries of an ancient moorland, never quite tamed. Its whispering dead seeking justice.

I bought this book on both kindle and audible and it is definitely better to read it yourself than listen to the drone of the narrator.

The story itself is interesting, love the details about the area and the folklore and it is well written, though maybe a bit too long.

Unfortunately, due to the narration, the character of Lorne doesn’t really come across. Yes I realise the guy has PTSD from his army years but just a little energy put into his characterisation would have improved this listen no end.

Even the descriptions are read in the same dull voice.

I love audio books but this totally spoilt it for me. I will try the next one on kindle only as I can’t tolerate the narration which just blurs into a constant boring drone.

Shame.

Spoilt by monotone narration!

I’m always on the lookout for a new series of crime novels and this is excellent. I really like the setting and characters, and the story is fast moving.
Very well read.

Delightful to find a new series

A great tale set in a beautiful part of the English countryside, this gives it a real quality that I haven’t had in other mysteries. It’s a difficult genre to name but it’s a great story that draws you in wanting to know the characters better and the story unfolds beautifully.

Fab story definitely recommend

I love the Lorne series and the narrator does well with this series.
I love the books and have read them all. I started listening to the audio books which I don’t normally do but I love this series so much I had to hear what the narrator had done and he’s done a fantastic job with story so far

Amazing

Just couldn’t get into this at all, got to the second chapter and was ready to throw my phone out of the window, the narrator’s style was shotgun and so annoying, I’ll have to purchase this as a book to read if I want to finish it, can’t believe anyone would hire this bloke to read their shopping list let alone their book.

The performance was awful

This was my first experience with Joe Talon's work, and I enjoyed it a lot. This is a fantastic narrative with action on every page. Interesting cast of individuals mixed with vivid descriptions of the environment. Sunday night I began reading, and Tuesday afternoon I finished. The plot is intriguing, the characters are developed and explained in an unique way, and there are several various threads that flow throughout the novel. Recommended for anyone who likes well-written, gritty novels with more than a touch of the dark side. Edmund Bloxam was the perfect choice of narrator.

I recently purchased the next book, so I'll just keep reading.

Really enjoyed this.

a very good story, great characters. Almost spoilt by monotone staccato narration. With a different narrator it would've been 5 stars

I picked up this audible as it is set in an area I know well. Great sense of place and beautifully described by an author who obviously knows Exmoor.
The characters are complex and engaging.
I love a good murder mystery, and this had a good pinch of magic to add an extra layer.

There are plenty of loose ends to lead into a second story, which hopefully will be following soon.

I took a few minutes to really tune into the narrator, but he defines the voices well and keeps the pace going really effectively.

Would recommend.

Atmospheric Exmoor Murder Mystery

Disliked the expletives which are unnecessary when atmosphere can be created without offensive language. Imagery is powerful.

Clear reading - no unwanted breathing sounds - well produced!
