About this listen

Victor Bayne, the psychic half a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who's more concerned with flying under the radar than in making waves.

He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or "Stiff") from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner's retirement party, and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces who can change his appearance to match any witness' idea of the world's hottest guy.

Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer's not leaving any spirits behind.

Psycop

I enjoyed this story! I like psychic and detective stories, so putting them together was perfect! It's not set fully in reality, as there are many psycops, a specialized training program, and medicine to block the psychic activity. The characters are all good and unique. I didn't feel the chemistry between the 2 MCs, but their romance is not the focus. This was a short story, so let's see how it develops. On to book 2.

Review for the PsyCop series

I hadn't read any of the PsyCop books before I listened to the series on Audible. I throughly enjoyed each story and Jordan's distinctive storytelling. I loved the premise of the series and thought the chemistry between Vic and Jacob was sizzling throughout. Gomez Pugh's performance was fabulous. His narration was spot on for each character. He differentiated each person clearly and made them come alive for me. I pictured everything going on in the scenes and recognized each character when they spoke. Jacob's voice was husky and so sexy. UNF! The production quality was excellent. I will definitely listen to all five superb stories again.

Great start!

I know I'm late to get into this series, but this was a great start. I'm going to listen next book in the series right away! Narration is really good, all characters have their own voice.

Worth investing in

The full PsyCop series develops from book to book over the series. The first four or five are short, novella length, but later titles get to the 12/14 hour mark. The first title is a fairly straight shot at paranormal detective with some sex thrown in. The arrows stand up because the world building has a solid base, the reasoning for the ‘let’s do sex almost immediately’ stands up (pardon the pun.) Very well written sex too, and the main couple’s romantic and sex lives grows with the series.

The narration is also competently well done; a convincing array of male and female voices.

CW for some terms which are now (rightly) seen as slurs, but ‘queer’ from a queer character floats, ‘retarded’ doesn’t. Two mentions in six books so far and honestly it speaks to character development.

I’m just about to start Book 6.

Enjoyable series kick-off

An entertaining novella, first in a series featuring the rather endearingly shambolic PsyCop, Victor Bayne. The author sets up her world - in which "stiff" (non-psychic) cops are paired up with a psi, and where it's clearly shown there's a downside to having psychic gifts. Victor and his new partner, Lisa are assigned to investigate a murder in which the victim is artfully arranged on a bed, surrounded by glass/mirror fragments. Victor, a level five medium is concerned when he can't sense the dead person - usually their ghosts hang around to bitch about being dead - so this is odd. We're also introduced to Victor's love interest, Jacob Marks (another "NP" - non-psychic) and his partner, Caroline who is the human equivalent of a lie detector, and the four of them set about solving the mystery and finding the killer. Because this is a novella, certain aspects are rushed - like the relationship between Victor and Jacob - but hopefully there'll be more development in future books. Victor is an engaging protagonist, and Gomez Pugh does a great job of bringing him to life. He expertly captures Victor's wield-weary cynicism and portrays all the other characters appropriately, making use of a variety of timber and accent. I'll be checking out more books in the series.

A Match Made in Heaven

I must admit, I am a fan of both Jordan Castillo Price's work, and narrator Gomez Pugh, so having their talents in one product is a match made in book heaven!

The story is a wonderful introduction to the Psycop series. Its a quick paced fun listen, centering on Victor Bane, a cop with a strange talent- he can see and talk to dead people. One could see how this would be handy, allowing him to chat to murder victims and find out who dunnit! However, with the murder case Victor has been called in on, he has a problem. No only has his psychic sense been numbed by a special drug he takes to block out the voices when off duty, he also finds that there is no ghost of the victim at the scene. Throw in a wonderful alpha cop, called Jacob Marks, who has the hots for him, and Victor has a lot on his mind, and in his hands!

Gomez Pugh continues to amaze and entertain with his wonderful, clear, well paced performance. I love his range of accents, and his British accent in particular gave me shivers for all the right reasons.

A wonderful M/M paranormal book, and a great listen. I would thoroughly recommend and will delightedly continue with the Psycop series.

My all time favorite book series

This coming from someone who can never pick favorites on anything, but I do feel comfortable saying this is my all time favorite book series. I first found it in 2019 and binged everything that was out by then. Ever since then I've had at least two rereads of everything every year. The story doesn't get old or diluted with rereads. Always just takes me on a wonderful journey. I love the psychic stuff and the cop stuff. These books actually made me fall in love with ghostly books. The character development is lovely and the stories just flow, flow, flow. I'm absolutely in love. These are my comfort books, my thrill books, and my "oh I miss these characters"-books. I will be back for more. again and again.

Note, If you're worried about the spice level: This book starts with a bang, but I was happy to find that this series really isn't just porn with a little bit of plot. Don't let that scare you away if you don't like spice. Each book has a different amount of spice, but it doesn't take away from the story either way. I'm in the camp of "sex is a part of human experience and I'm no prude, but books that fetishize gay sex make me uncomfortable, so I prefer that if there is sex, it really is there because the intimacy serves the story and character arc". I feel like these books fit this well.

hugely original story

An alternative universe which is so grounded, it is hard to disbelieve it. The narrator is just right for Vic, skilled and fluent, never throwing you out of the story.

Great to hear Victor's voice at last.

What made the experience of listening to Among the Living the most enjoyable?

I already know the book well, so it was great to hear the words come to life. The narration works well for the character.

What about Gomez Pugh’s performance did you like?

He captured Vic's tension and nerves well, along with the edge of cynicism. I was a bit more mixed in my reaction to the other character voices. Some I liked right away, others I took a while to warm up to. One I'm still not on board with. But the voices were all clearly differentiated and the narrator handles the opposite sex voices well.

Any additional comments?

At just under three hours this one can be listened to in a single session quite easily. I'll definitely try to do at least once when I listen again in the future. I hope the rest of the series will follow!
