About this listen

Four hundred years from now mankind is strung out across a region of interstellar space inherited from an ancient civilization discovered on Mars. The colonies are linked together by the occasional sublight colony ship voyages and hyperspatial data-casting. Human consciousness is digitally freighted between the stars and downloaded into bodies as a matter of course.

But some things never change. So when ex-envoy, now-convict Takeshi Kovacs has his consciousness and skills downloaded into the body of a nicotine-addicted ex-thug and presented with a catch-22 offer, he really shouldn't be surprised. Contracted by a billionaire to discover who murdered his last body, Kovacs is drawn into a terrifying conspiracy that stretches across known space and to the very top of society. Read by Todd McLaren.

Not really my cup of tea

Weird sex scenes and not a lot of science fiction, lost track a few times.

Excellent

Listened to this first a couple of years back and again just now. Highly entertaining both times.

Well written debut with big ideas

Futuristic detective noir. A lot of big themes and ideas running throughout.
Raises a lot if questions about power and humanity that are seamlessly woven into the plot itself.

Excellent. Great story

I came to this after the tv series, both book and tv are great in their own ways. The additional background in the book was good, and the world created is immersive. Hooked from the start. I love the story and the characters.

I liked the performance, but the level was a bit low, which made listening in the car difficult.

Into book 2 to see if that captivates in the same way.

Solid Cyberpunk Noir

The Black Man was my first Richard Morgan novel and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all his Kovacs novels too. At first, I didn't warm to the narrator's voice, but he was able to add different nuances to all the characters that worked well. As a Brit though, I found McLaren's voice almost sleep-inducing at times although the recording quality isn't great - which doesn't help - and I'm sure toning down the mid-ranges would work better. My bread bin (acts as a bluetooth speaker stand in the kitchen) rattled continuously throughout.

I think it's a great story. Standard detective fiction but spun beautifully in Morgan's well thought out future. Attention to detail and clever explanations all made me smile as I listened and many things I'd missed while reading it were made clear in the audio. Looking forward to see what Netflix do with it.

top scifi.

A tad male centric but solid female characters made up for that. Great setting and action

Takeshi Kovacs tears up the town

Im not normally a fan of sci fi books so much as fantasy but this book is amazing, full of excitement, plot twists and great writing. If you loved the show, this will live up to the hype!

Enjoyable listen

Good story but narration a little stilted at times, different audio levels noticeable any way.
