About this listen

Read by the author, Jacinda Ardern.

This is not just a book for people who follow politics, but for anyone who has ever doubted themselves, or wanted to make a difference.

The deeply personal memoir from the former prime minister of New Zealand, then the world’s youngest female head of government and just the second to become a mother in office.

‘An essential, inspiring read’ – Natalie Portman
'Fascinating and engaging . . . makes us yearn for an era of courage and hope' - Nicola Sturgeon, The Observer

Jacinda Ardern grew up the daughter of a police officer in small-town New Zealand, but as the 40th Prime Minister of her country, she became a global icon for her empathetic leadership that put people first. She guided her country through unprecedented challenges, from the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks to a global pandemic. She advanced visionary policies to address climate change and child poverty. And all while juggling first-time motherhood in the public eye.

This is the inspiring story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt changed our assumptions of what a leader can be. A Different Kind of Power is more than a political memoir. Powerfully evocative and refreshingly open, it is a profound insight into how it feels to lead, it asks: what if you, too, are capable of more than you ever imagined?

'Clear-eyed and luminous' – Bill Bailey
'Warm and funny . . . emotionally rich and candid' - The Guardian
'Wonderfully frank and open' - The Rest is Politics: Leading

Simply told, from the behind the scenes of powerful leader many of us already admire from the outside. Yes, perhaps in parts it’s trying to justify some of her actions and decisions, but her humanity and kindness shine through.

A human and empathic memoir by an awesomely inspiring leader

Jacinda is a great story teller and listening to this book was a joy. I laughed, smiled and cried throughout the book. I hope she can inspire other leaders to do things with more heart and compassion.

What an incredible listen from an incredible woman.

The honesty and down to earth approach both to her history and the narration What a humble and inspiring woman The world watched on during her time as prime minister both after the shootings and throughout the pandemic and marvelled at her leadership Her role and approach did not come over as well as in the book as it did in real time This was part of her humbleness as she was amazing Other things that she did during her time as Prime Minister was not covered in the book Overall a very well written book with excellent narration

Honesty and humility

Absolutely loved this. Jacinda is an inspiration. Her performance of her own story is great (not always a given) and emotional- I cried at points. Strongly recommend.

So enjoyed listening to this story especially because it was read by the author herself- wonderful

What a lady

I loved this book and it was made all the more compelling by being read by the woman herself. With no high ambitions to become leader of her party or her nation JA stepped into this role and convincingly showed the world that she was the right person at the right time in the right office. She lead her country through some difficult times with such grace, compassion and humility and won the respect and admiration of many people far beyond the confines of that country.
She should be proud of her accomplishments and for all the tough decisions she had to make; including her decision to step down when she did.
It’s a great read and an excellent inspiration for young women everywhere to learn that they are capable of more than they know.

Honest, vulnerable and compassionate

Learning about NZ and how Jacinda Arden coped with the work and being a new mum is a fascinating story.
Her humanity shines and her political ideals remained intact, with the maturity of knowing when to let go of an idea for change if it wasn’t going to work.
Jacinda exhibited bravery in sticking to her guns when her inner voice told her it was right to keep with it.
Her ability to rapidly and decisively deal with a massacre and immediate gun law changes, COVID, convincingly win a second election, handle a deadly volcano and a myriad of other stressful issues is inspiring to read about. Being unashamed to give a hug when needed and show human kindness, irrespective of colour or creed is moving.
Thank you so much for telling your story and lifting the curtain a wee bit on political life in NZ.

Openness.

Your stories are so real and authentic like how you show up on the screen, especially through COVID.
Thanks for your kind and bravery to show us what a true leader looks like!
