About this listen

“Of every book written by anybody associated with the Trump administration, in any way, [this] is absolutely the one to read.” —Rachel Maddow

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | A celebrated foreign policy expert and key impeachment witness reveals how declining opportunity has set America on the grim path of modern Russia—and draws on her personal journey out of poverty, as well as her unique perspectives as an historian and policy maker, to show how we can return hope to our forgotten places.

"This book has a miraculous quality.... As a memoir this is hard to put down; if you are seeking a better American future you should pick it up.”—Timothy Snyder, New York Times best-selling author of On Tyranny

Fiona Hill grew up in a world of terminal decay. The last of the local mines had closed, businesses were shuttering, and despair was etched in the faces around her. Her father urged her to get out of their blighted corner of northern England: “There is nothing for you here, pet,” he said.

The coal-miner’s daughter managed to go further than he ever could have dreamed. She studied in Moscow and at Harvard, became an American citizen, and served three U.S. Presidents. But in the heartlands of both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. By the time she offered her brave testimony in the first impeachment inquiry of President Trump, Hill knew that the desperation of forgotten people was driving American politics over the brink—and that we were running out of time to save ourselves from Russia’s fate. In this powerful, deeply personal account, she shares what she has learned, and shows why expanding opportunity is the only long-term hope for our democracy.

Uplifting story with hope as it’s backbone. A must read for anyone who cares about the less fortunate amongst us.

Brilliant

I really enjoyed this book, it’s so insightful in so many areas and there are solutions too. A great read!

Brilliant book, a wealth of insight

A balanced, compellingly told, perhaps overly modest recount of a sensational life spent in Thatcher’s Britain, post-Soviet Russia and a White House in turmoil.

Fiona Hill for Prime Minister… please!

An uplifting account of a rise from poverty in NE England to the US White House. Shedding light on the Trump administration's disfunction, Hill's experiences in the UK, the USA and Russia allow her to make some chilling warnings. She also shares a range of practical solutions to removing inequalities and avoiding populist authoritarianism.

Insightful, inspiring and motivational

What a great listen. Fiona Hill is an excellent narrator of her own story and it was so informative, thoughtful, scary and ultimately uplifting with her insights and possible solutions to offer opportunities to all. Her inside view of a populist politician in the White House was fascinating. It makes her analysis of how these individuals claim power for their own ends while pretending to fight for the rights of the underprivileged even more prescient - particularly bearing in mind the war in Ukraine and the frightening possibility that Trump could be re-elected in 2024.

Fabulous nook

An inspirational and fascinating insight into how FIona overcame the odds to make it to the highest levels of government. I was attracted to the book by her Russia work but the portrayal of links between society’s was really interesting.

Lots for you here

From humble beginnings to the White House! What am incredible journey. Still hard to wrap your head around that, that doesn't detract from the hurdles and effort the author has gone through to get there though. A really insightful account from both sides of the pond and should give people a good idea of events that have shaped our societies often to the detriment of the overall populations.
there should be more people with the knowledge and moral compass like Fiona in Politics. a Fantastic book, thank you!

A Fantastic Insight, from an Incredible Woman.

An almost parallel existence to my own except other side of the Pennines, Leicester rather than Durham and finally, a complete absence in involvement in world events. That apart, we could have been twins, Fiona, so thank you for sharing obvious but rarely aired home truths!

I didn’t come here for a lecture on Communism!

This should be required listening (must be heard in Fiona’s wonderful voice) for every legislator in the US and UK. Maybe every person…..

Fiona Hill’s life story is riveting. In telling it, she brilliantly and expertly sums up all that needs fixing in 21st century politics and how to fix it.

Having escaped England’s deprived North East, Fiona found herself at the centre of politics in Trump’s White House. Appalled by his populism and narcissism, she was not surprised that so many Americans supported him. This book should be compulsory reading for politicians and anyone in a position of authority.

Fascinating, insightful and powerful
