About this listen

Back when they were students, Simon and his friend, Ray, had dreams to become rock stars. Fifteen years later their mid-30s are bearing down fast, and they're having to accept a less glamorous life.

Ray takes refuge from his responsibilities by living a virtual existence in online games. People say he needs to grow up, but everybody finds their own way of coping.

But for Simon it's serial murder, mass slaughter and professional assassination.

"Sharply satirical and poignantly funny, this is a gripping and highly entertaining read." ( Time Out)
"A bit like a literary computer game, this novel has plenty of verve and dash." ( Irish Times)

Probably not his best book but, nevertheless, very entertaining, very humorous and a good listen on a wet, windy trek by the seaside!

Epic!

Action, character, humour and immensely satisfying payoff, as ever. This is my second time around having read the book a decade ago. Still just as good. The narrator had a lot of accents to handle and pulled it off impressively.

Brookmyre at his best

unexpected twists and novel plot - funny too. Audible needs more words for a review so much for being concise.

second time I've read this

This is a great rip-roaring story, but also a great examination of a relationship between a normal functioning human being and a narcissist. I also loved the description of terrorists as just wankers - they want to be the bogeyman but at the end of the day they are inadequate people vaunting their lack of empathy as boldness.

Very relatable characters

well written plot, excellent narration, will be reading more of this author in future for sure

Thoroughly enjoyed,

I've listened to this one over and over, and it's always a treat. The author interweaves past and present at just the right pace, the plot is ludicrous but (sadly) entirely possible, and the characters are all totally solid. There's also at least one gag that will have you spitting out your coffee.

The other Angelique de Xavier books are equally good, so give your ears some joy and start with this one.

Dark, cynical and extremely funny

Chris Brookmyre can always be relied upon for a great story, brilliantly told, but this is definitely one of my favourites 😀

Loved it

Good storyline and an excellent narrator . Too many biographies and back stories though for the various characters meant that the story was very slow to progress.

A B+

Absolutely loved this. Everything about it was right up my alley so although it may not really be a five star read (probably a four for most people?), it was for me. You know when a book provides your kind of humour, action and everything else into one? That's the way that this one felt. It had an interesting plot (the terrorist's plan actually felt quite original and different), occasional hilarious rants about what it is like to work in a dull office job and an impressive combination of characters. The narration was excellent too with just the right Scottish lilt for the setting. Loved it.

Fantastic Fun
