About this listen

"This isn’t how I pictured my life, you know? It was going to be fabulous. I was going to be fabulous.”

Meet Charlie; unfulfilled and perimenopausal, Charlie’s suburban life is a far cry from the Manhattan glamour she once dreamed of. Her husband is incapable of talking about anything other than his latest Ironman challenge, her sex life consists of fictional encounters with Hollywood stars, her kids need constant man-management, and to make things worse, her optician has just prescribed her reading glasses.

Oh, and she can’t stop crying at TV adverts…

In the hope of re-discovering her sense of self, Charlie begins writing a list: 45 things to do before she’s 45.

  1. Eat an oyster
  2. Take up parkour
  3. Read War and Peace
  4. Take ecstasy
  5. Try stand-up comedy
  6. Go to a sex club

Determined to complete them all, Charlie embarks on a chaotic odyssey through her own spectacular midlife crisis, challenging herself to become the person she wants to be. But what happens if we’re not that person? How do we learn to let them go? Or does something else have to give?

Uproariously funny and deeply human, 45 Things… is an all-too relatable story of what it means to be alive and how much living we all still have to do.

Narrated by the inimitable Isy Suttie (Peep Show), 45 Things... is the perfect listen for fans of Dolly Alderton, Caitlin Moran and Marian Keyes.

"There is so much to relate to. I can guarantee that if you're a woman and over thirty, you'll be nodding and laughing along!” – Laura Pearson, author of The Last List of Mabel Beaumont

Raucous good fun

I quickly abandoned all my plans and worldly commitments after just a couple of chapters so that I could fully commit myself to listening. I had the BEST time.

Funny, realistic, and poignant

I ADORED this story! From the extremely realistic opening (40 something mum waking with a hangover under siege from nerf guns) I was completely drawn in by Charlie and her quest to rediscover who she was. I giggled at her mishaps, nodded in recognition at her frustrations with domestic life, and cried for her trying to find the person she wants to be while not really being sure what happened to the person she once was. Loved every minute and couldn’t listen to it fast enough!

A bit boring overall

Started off with promise but never really developed much of a plot. Main character quite irritating. Listened at x1.5 speed after reaching half way so that I could get it finished and start a more interesting book!

Good story line but main character self obsessed

And the self obsession made her come across as very selfish and not very likeable so I didn’t really care if she completed the list or not! I was fully invested in her friends lives tho !

Great read

Not my usual sort of book but as it was in audible plus I gave it a go and I’m glad I did. The story was funny and being a woman of 44 I found it very relatable. The narrator was fantastic and really brought the book to life so yes I would recommend this book, particularly for ladies in their late 30’s and above

Nice to read about a flawed woman with humour

Good performance and the main character is both funny and honest. Reminds us all that what we think we want isn’t always best for us. Underneath it all it’s about a struggle to find yourself in middle aged motherhood

Good beginning, not sure about the ending.

I got really into it at the beginning. The ending was not what I expected and I felt a little disappointed.

Isy Sutie is outstanding!

The book itself is ok, Isy brings it to life. She is absolutely amazing.
