I have always found the inspiration to write through reading. Like Frijolito, the rescue dog from my first book, I was born in the Dominican Republic on the southeastern town called San Pedro de Macorís and moved to Union City, New Jersey. My sisters and I arrived on a cold and rainy November day back in 1985. I was fourteen years old and could not speak or write English. What I recall, vividly, is the cold inhabiting my Caribbean bloodstream with unrelenting purpose. My toes are still in shock! A funny anecdote about me is that when I was a young girl, I carried around a small blackboard—no, not a tablet or smartphone (gasp!) —on which I would write down vocabulary words I came across while reading books, magazines, and my grandma’s sewing catalogs. As a precocious reader, it was cuentos, or stories, like E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, that first transported me to an alternate reality where animals and children shared extraordinary bonds. I hope that my book, JJ & Frijolito becomes your Charlotte’s Web. Today, I am a mother of two amazing sons on a quest to find my forever sunny spot.
