Martin Gallagher is a former superintendent with Police Scotland and has a background in investigating serious crime and responding to national crisis events. Martin’s three-decade policing career encompassed periods in both uniform roles and many years as a detective, where he focused on intelligence activities and the investigation of serious crime. He worked on national crisis events, the G8, the London Olympics, COP26, and the merging of the legacy Scottish police forces. He was Area Commander of Paisley, Scotland’s largest town, and led successful technological change projects. He was also deployed to Southeast Asia as a leadership mentor. During his police service, Martin received 3 commendations for personal bravery. Martin’s academic journey is a testament to his intellectual curiosity and commitment to the field of criminology. He holds a PhD in Criminology, a Master's Degree in Terrorism Studies and Criminal Justice Studies, and a Degree in Philosophy. His scholarly contributions extend beyond his degrees, with over 50 publications to his name. His writings cover a wide range of topics, including terrorism, organized crime, leadership, and police technology. Globally recognized for his expertise, he has been invited to speak at numerous conferences, including on behalf of UNODC, the Global Counter Terrorism Forum, and ICCT-The Hague. Since transitioning from his police career, Martin has continued to make significant contributions in various professional roles. He has shared his wealth of knowledge and experience by teaching Criminology at several universities. His commitment to public service is evident in his role as a Board Member with Disclosure Scotland. Martin’s insights and perspectives are also sought after in the media, where he is a regular commentator.
