James Campbell is the author of five books. For his first book, The Final Frontiersman, he logged hundreds of miles across Arctic Alaska. The Final Frontiersman was chosen by Amazon as one of its top Outdoor titles and one of the Top 50 books of the Year. Campbell’s fascination with New Guinea and WWII led him to the story of The Ghost Mountain Boys, and his groundbreaking book of the same name, which the Chicago Tribune called “one of the best nonfiction titles of the year.” The Tampa Bay Tribune wrote, "Campbell retraced the route of the Ghost Mountain Boys and came back with a gripping tale of courageous Americans fighting in horrendous conditions -- even for war." The book also won the 2008 RR Donnelley Award, given for the highest literary achievement by a Wisconsin author. Campbell’s story of his 2006 expedition to New Guinea, “Chasing Ghosts,” appeared in Outside magazine and was chosen for The Best American Travel Writing 2008. Kirkus calls Campbell’s third book, The Color of War, "A fine account of a little-known milestone in the battle for civil rights." Campbell’s book, Braving It, was an Amazon Editor’s Pick for Best Memoirs, was named by Outside magazine as a “Best Book” of the year, and won the Silver Medal in the prestigious Lowell Thomas Award. His story “Star Power” for Outside about sailing through Micronesia with the world’s last star navigators was a Notable Selection for The Best American Science and Nature Writing. Campbell's newest book, Heart of the Jaguar (WW Norton) will be released in November. Campbell was an Executive Producer of the hit Discovery Channel series, The Last Alaskans, and an Executive Producer of History Channel’s Great Lake Warriors. His three-part documentary series, Gold and Greed, aired on Netflix in March. Campbell is a partner at Gum Street Productions. Campbell lives in rural Wisconsin with his wife Elizabeth and, formerly, their three daughters.
