Carlos Pérez Casas: the historian who tells of impossible futures and forgotten pasts Carlos Pérez Casas (Zaragoza, 1989) writes with a clear premise: that History is not only what happened, but also what could have been. A History teacher, editorial proofreader and novelist, he has turned his academic background into a springboard toward speculative worlds where rigor, imagination and narrative commitment converge. With a degree in History and a Master’s in Contemporary History from the University of Zaragoza, Carlos began his literary career in the realm of dark science fiction. His debut novel, «El Señor es mi pastor», envisions a future ruled by mining corporations and religious repression, where human life is worth only as much as the organs it can provide. Encouraged by readers, he published the prequel «El Cirujano», focused on the origins of the disease that decimates the population. This short novel appeared in issue no. 3 of Windumanoth magazine and soon became his most-read work. But his gaze is not fixed solely on the future. With «El alguacil», finalist in the 2017 Guillermo de Baskerville Prize, Carlos turns to 12th-century Aragon to weave a choral tale of intrigue, justice and power, told from the perspective of humble characters who rarely appear in official chronicles. Highly recommended. His latest work, «Lágrimas de fuego», transports the reader to a fantasy world inspired by the Spanish Golden Age and the mystique of the Olympic flame. He is currently working on the final draft of «Noventa atmósferas», a novel set in a floating city above Venus, where the instinct for survival collides with financial desperation. A loyal participant in the NaNoWriMo initiative, Carlos writes each story as if it were his last, blending formal ambition, historical precision and social sensitivity. In every one of his novels pulses the same question: Are we more defined by what we remember or by what we imagine?
