About this listen

Asa Akira (28) has already had an extremely unusual life. Educated at the United Nations International School in Manhattan, she soon was earning a good living by stripping and working as a dominatrix at a sex dungeon. Akira has now built up a reputation for being of the most popular, hardworking, and extreme actors in the business, winning dozens of awards for her 330+ movies, including her number-one best-selling adult film series Asa Akira Is Insatiable.

In Insatiable, Akira recounts her extraordinary life in chapters that are hilarious, shocking, and touching. In a wry, conversational tone, she talks about her experiences shoplifting and doing drugs while in school, her relationships with other porn stars (she is married to one) and with the industry at large, and her beliefs about women and sexuality. Insatiable is filled with Akira’s unusual and often highly amusing anecdotes, including her visit to a New Hampshire sex shop run by a mother and son.

In a world where porn is increasingly becoming part of the mainstream, Akira is one of very few articulate voices writing from the inside. She has something important, controversial, and astonishingly interesting to say about sex and its central role in our lives and culture.

Great that she narrated her own book,
loved it. Outstanding insight to the industry.
thoroughly enjoyed and was genuinely intrigued to get back to listening to it everytime I took a break from it.

would recommend it you are a fan of porn or Asa herself.

A great inside look

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend it, although I don't think it's to everyone's liking. The subject in itself, and her frankness is sure to scare the more... prudish segments on society off.

What did you like best about this story?

That it's not a story - don't go into this thinking it's gonna be nicely structured and follow some sort of narrative. I don't know why, but it comes out as conversation (whether she intended this or not). Imagine sitting down for a coffee with Asa, and she's telling you about her life without a script or plan, just talking.

How could the performance have been better?

Asa is not very good, she's not clear at times, going on mumbling, and especially the haikus were absolutely impossible to hear. I was listening to this in a car most of the time, but even without the possible engine noises, she's not trained (obviously) in narration.

But, on the other hand, I was happy that she was reading it herself.

Could you see Insatiable being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

No, there would be no point. Her experiences as a human are in no way extraordinary.

Any additional comments?

Her passion for her work might give you a new view on porn.

It's Like Grabbing a Coffee with Asa

Some interesting insights into the world of porn but too much rambling about drugs, food and sitting at home doing nothing.

Worth a listen

A surprisingly good book, and intriguing look into a world most people really know very little about.

Having this book read by the author makes all the difference in the world.
The recording quality was very good.

Funny and insightful.

An interesting and well told story from Asa, that is both engaging and captivating. The biggest disappointment however is who she appears to be, as a person. I maybe I shouldn't have expected anything else from a porn star, but rarely have I heard a person be so self satisfied, greedy, narcissistic and single minded, while acknowledging non of this in the process. While many people think porn stars are people that get used, Asa is definitely a person that is a porn stars so she can use others. Although it doesn't seem like she has done too much harm in the world, she also seems to lack redeeming qualities outside of sex. Her pride in the fact that she has never had to pay for anything, and used men to pay, seems to be the biggest constant. I understand that in her shoes maybe this is using her "talent" to her advantage. But sadly, she comes across as not the sort of person you would want as a friend. Nonetheless, it's a good story.

Interesting but reprehensible

not sure about this book. it's a strange combo of a spotlight into the world of porn and the narcissism of the author. much of it is mundane but the most interesting thing is how pornography to her generation is a norm. is this the future?

interesting

The author encourages rape culture and violence against women, not only that but it’s also poorly written and performed. I’m by no means a prude but this book is utterly disgusting in its portrayal of women in the sex industry, exposing them as one dimensional sex objects who can be used and abused time after time for the pleasure of others and according to the author, they all love it. It’s left me feeling really disturbed.

This is the most disturbing book I’ve ever listened to
