En 1906 un acontecimiento real, el intento de volar el Observatorio de Greenwich por parte de un anarquista llamado Martial Bourdin, inspiró a Joseph Conrad el tema de un relato magistral. Sobre el telón de fondo del Londres de comienzos de siglo, una ciudad monstruosa e indiferente, se desarrolla la historia de un fallido atentado que revela el turbio entramado formado por el terrorismo internacional, la acción de la policía y la diplomacia deshonesta.

Hlavní hrdina, námořník Charles Marlow líčí svou cestu do Afriky ve službách jisté obchodní Společnosti. Jeho úkolem je převzít kontrolu nad zásilkou slonoviny a především vyhledat a ochránit pana Kurtze, nejschopnějšího zástupce Společnosti, kterého doslova předchází jeho pověst. Marlow slyší ze všech stran o jeho schopnostech, velkém duchu i heroických činech. Když však dorazí k cíli, nachází ho na jednom z nejtemnějších míst na zemi v krajně zbědovaném stavu, otřeseného, zděšeného a na pokraji šílenství.

Joseph Conrad was born on 3rd December 1857 in Berdychiv in the Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. His birthplace had been part of Poland which its neighbours dismembered into their own Empires. Conrad brought to English Literature both narrative mastery, compelling prose and fully formed characters as well as a deeper examination of the human psyche in a wealth of work. He wrote many novels, short stories, nonfiction, and memoirs which are rightly regarded today as some of the finest in English literature. Jospeh Conrad died on the 3rd August 1924 at Bishopsbourne, Kent in England.

This introduction is not scholarly. It is not designed to impress, but to connect with possibly new fans of Joseph Conrad. As the current trends of purges of past collide with the present, it is my hope this work will not be one of those deleted or banned in libraries. Conrad began writing Suspense in 1920, four years before his death. Yet as early in 1905, the late author used Memories of the Countess De Boigne as a basis for many of the characters the listener will see in the work. This is not a slight; not many academics criticized Conrad for doing so.

Drawn to the little seaport of Colebrook by an anonymous letter, elderly and eccentric Captain Hagberd settles down to build a home ready for the day when his son, Harry, who ran away to sea many years ago, finally returns. As the years pass, the old man convinces himself that Harry will come back on some never-realized "to-morrow", and Bessie, the lonely and unhappy daughter of the Captain's neighbor, comes to share in the Captain's desperate hope....

The steamship Nan-Shan, en route through the China seas to the port of Fu-chau during the season of tropical storms, with 200 returning Chinese workers aboard, encounters an ominous fall in the barometer. Phlegmatic and unimaginative Captain MacWhirr, unable to comprehend the awesome natural forces ahead of him, refuses to alter his course, pitting his ship and his own indomitable will against the fury of the storm.

Jim versucht, seiner Vergangenheit zu entkommen. Als Erster Offizier auf einem Pilgerschiff beging er einen schrecklichen Fehler, der ihn Ruf und Laufbahn kostete. "Un socio" reúne una buena parte de las características de la obra de Joseph Conrad, si bien en esta ocasión el escenario no es una gran aventura. Se trata de un relato construido en diferentes planos y escrito con un estilo ágil, de gran originalidad.

Un hombre de dudosa condición moral embauca a su honrado e ingenuo socio para hundir un barco de su propiedad y así poder cobrar la prima del seguro. Lo central en esta historia es el juego de tensiones psicológicas, desarrollado con maestría y rematado con un final de acción trepidante.

Forty-two years old Marlow is drinking with four other Englishmen. They have known each other since the beginning of their working lives. Some of them have other jobs now, but they still gather to recall the good old days. Marlow tells his friends a story of his early life, when he travelled to the East as a young man in search of adventure. He shares his experience and impressions of the different cultures he came across with the four men.

In this 1901 short story inspired by Ford Maddox Ford’s "The Cinque Ports", Conrad works on the theme of alienation. It centers on a young man, Yanko, the sole survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Kent. The locals, not knowing that a boat has sunk, shun him as he washes up on their shores. But he is taken in by an eccentric local, and little by little, Yanko learns some English and falls in love with the servant girl, Amy Foster. But he has not come to the end of his troubles yet and the community keeps him at arm’s length, terrified of his very difference.

Idealistic parson's son Jim goes to sea thirsting for adventure as the mate of the pilgrim ship Patna. However, when disaster looms, Jim is persuaded by his crewmates to abandon the ship, leaving the vessel and hundreds of passengers to their fate. But with his life in ruins, Jim alone has the courage to face up to the public censure which follows, piquing the interest of Captain Marlow, who befriends Jim and relates the tale of the young man's attempts to come to terms with his guilt and make an honorable future for himself.

Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent (1907) is a tragic tale based on the themes of espionage, double agents, anarchism, and terrorism. The story is set in London in 1886 and deals with Mr. Verloc, who works as a spy for an unnamed country. When he becomes involved in an anarchist plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory, things go haywire, revealing an unholy mess that involves politicians, policemen, foreign diplomats, and London's high society.

The Shadow Line tells the story of a young man whose dream to be a captain of his ship comes true accidentally. He should command a boat from Bangkok to Singapore filled with sick passengers. His crew gets infected by malaria, and he finds out the medicine necessary to save them is missing deliberately after a couple of days wandering in the sea with no wind in sight. His mate convinces him that the ghost of the previous captain, who before his death turned insane and wanted to take the ship down along himself and the crew, has cursed them.

Heart of Darkness centers around Marlow, an introspective sailor, and his journey up the Congo River to meet Kurtz, reputed to be an idealistic man of great abilities. Marlow takes a job as a riverboat captain with the Company, a Belgian concern organized to trade in the Congo. As he travels to Africa and then up the Congo, Marlow encounters widespread inefficiency and brutality in the Company’s stations. The natives of the region have been forced into the Company’s service, and they suffer terribly from overwork and ill treatment at the hands of the Company’s agents.

Verloc vive con su mujer Vinnie, más joven que el, su suegra y su cuñado, que tiene algún problema mental. Tienen una pequeña tienda en el centro de Londres y una vida bastante normal, al menos en apariencia. Sin embargo el Inspector Heat, no está nada convencido de lo que le dicen las apariencias y sospecha que detrás de esa fachada se oculta un criminal peligroso y aunque no tiene ninguna prueba, es testarudo y va a seguir investigando hasta que la encuentre. El agente secreto, interactuando con anarquistas y comunistas consigue crear una atmósfera de inseguridad....

Cuando esta obra fue escrita el imperio británico estaba en la cima y el Reino Unido controlaba colonias y dependencias a lo largo de todo el planeta. Marlowe, un marinero, cuenta a sus compañeros, como consiguió trabajo de piloto y realizó un viaje por el río Congo hacia una las estaciones de explotación de marfil, en el centro de la jungla. Allí se encuentra con un personaje rodeado de un especial halo de misterio a lo largo de toda la novela: el comerciante de marfil Kurtz.
