American author Kate Chopin's "The Kiss" was written on September 19, 1894, and first published in Vogue on January 17, 1895. It is a short story about a woman scheming to marry a wealthy man.

This collection of nine short stories takes the listener back to 19th-century Louisiana. Universal themes of love and death are intertwined with the issues of slavery and racism. Each story, steeped in the religious and social culture of the bayou, holds an unexpected turn or two.

Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was a Louisiana-based author of short stories and novels, and is considered a forerunner of 20th-century feminist authors from the South. In "The Storm", a man seeks shelter at the home of his former lover, a visit which reignites their passion, while "Her Letters" is a story about the husband of a woman who dies before she is able to destroy the letters written to her by a lover. In "Unexpected", Randall and Dorothea fall in and out of love; "The Locket" tells the tale of two young lovers during the American Civil War; and "Kiss" has a humorous twist.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. It is difficult to propose a more gifted exponent of the short story than Kate Chopin. Her individual jewels may be brief but are laden with atmosphere and character as they run their enchanted course. Her genius will always endure.

With its realistic portrayal of female marital infidelity, an anudience accustomed to the pieties of late Victorian romantic fiction were shocked by Chopin's radical portrayal of a woman trapped in a stifling marriage, seeking passionate physical love outside the confines of her domestic situation.
