Racconta la fantastica avventura di Phileas Fogg, gentlemen londinese di poche parole ma grande coraggio. Per tentare di vincere una scommessa fatta con i soci del suo Club, parte in fretta e furia, assieme al suo domestico Passepartout, per un viaggio praticamente impossibile: il giro del mondo in non più di ottanta giorni. Sorprendono e incuriosiscono i resoconti dei progressi tecnologici del diciannovesimo secolo: i mezzi di trasporto erano già molto efficienti.

An early draft of the novel, initially rejected by Verne's publisher and wholly reconceived before publication, was titled "Shipwrecked Family: Marooned With Uncle Robinson".
