In 1818, was born Kayamkulam Kochunni a heroic outlaw from Kayamkulam. He lived in the Central Travancore area in present-day Kerala and is said to have stolen from the rich and given to the poor. Legends on his life are part of the folklore of Kerala.

Parayi Petta Panthirukulam, is a popular folktale in Kerala according to which, Vararuchi married a girl belonging to Paraya, a lower caste and set out a long pilgrimage. On the way, they were blessed with 12 children, of which 11 children were deserted. The 11 abandoned children were adopted and brought up by 11 different families, from various sections of society.
