Stephen Crane was born 1st November 1871 in Newark, New Jersey, and was the eighth surviving child out of 14. Incredibly, he began writing at the age of four and was published several times by the age of 16. Crane only began a full-time education when he was nine but quickly mastered the grades needed to catch up and move forward. Although educated at Lafayette and Syracuse, he had little interest in completing university and was keener to move on to a career, declaring college to be ‘a waste of time’.

The Red Badge of Courage is Civil War novel by the author Stephen Crane (1871-1900). The story is about a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who deserts the battlefield. Overcome with shame, he yearns for a wound, a "red badge of courage", to atone for his cowardice. When his regiment once again engages in battle, Henry becomes the standard-bearer who carries the flag.

A Tent in Agony is a humorous story of a man who looked after a tent when his companions went to fetch supplies. He was attacked by a bear and ran into the tent. The bear got entangled as the tent collapsed around it which caused quite a spectacle.

Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was a prolific American poet, novelist and short story writer. He is recognised by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. 'The Open Boat' is probably Stephen Crane's best known and most admired story. It tells the adventure of four sailors, the captain, the oiler, the cook and the correspondent, who are sole survivors of a shipwreck at sea in a small rowing boat off the coast of Florida.

First published in 1895, Crane's novel of the Civil War was written entirely from newspaper accounts and research, as Crane himself never went to war. Nevertheless, this powerful psychological study of a young soldier's struggle with the internal and external horrors that war unleashes will strike listeners with its undeniable realism and with its masterful description of the moment-by-moment eruption of emotions felt by men under fire.

Henry, or the youth as Crane refers to him leaves his home a naïve boy with visions of grandeur and glory; yet he runs from his first battle only to later join the walking wounded as an imposter. One, a spectral soldier with a terrible wound, turns out to be his friend Jim Conklin.

A young boy finds a homeless dog desperate for love and brings him into his home. What is frightening about Crane's take on this typical relationship, a boy and his dog, are the parallels between the young boy's treatment of the dog and his abusive, alcoholic father's treatment of those around him.
