At the heart of each of these great classic stories is an adoptee with an indomitable spirit who becomes the heroine (or hero) of her own life. Villette (1853), was Charlotte Brontë's third novel and the last published during her lifetime. After an unspecified family catastrophe, the main character, Lucy Snowe, travels to Belgium to teach in a boarding school in the fictional town of Villette. She falls in love with a man she cannot marry, which triggers a nervous breakdown. Ultimately, a new, strong Lucy emerges who becomes the owner and head of her own school.

Attraction, desire and sex were not proper subjects for a 19th-century novel, and Charlotte Brontë's clear and open handling of all three in Jane Eyre was shocking, exciting and revolutionary. Jane Eyre - a small, plain-faced, intelligent and honest English orphan - is abused by her aunt and cousins as a child; acquires role models during her education at Lowood Academy; and becomes the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester.

This somewhat autobiographical novel is based loosely on Charlotte's love for Professor Heger in Brussels and is a forerunner to Villette. Young William Crimsworth is hired by the headmistress of a girl's boarding school. Eventually, he appears to be falling in love with her. She asks him to help tutor Frances, a young teacher. Complications ensue.

Charlotte Brontë (21 April 1816 - 31 March 1855) was a British novelist, the eldest of the three famous Brontë sisters whose novels have become standards of English literature. Charlotte Brontë, who used the pen name Currer Bell, is best known for Jane Eyre, one of the most famous of English novels.
