Men who were led by the hand or groped their way along the wall to reach Jesus were touched by his finger and went home without a guide, rejoicing that Jesus Christ had opened their eyes. Jesus is still able to perform such miracles. And, with the power of the Holy Spirit, his Word will be expounded and we’ll watch for the signs to follow, expecting to see them at once. Why shouldn’t those who read this be blessed with the light of heaven? This is my heart's inmost desire.

Spurgeon Gems is a collection of quotations from Spurgeon’s sermons, preached during the years 1880 through 1892. The 280 quotations mostly consist of a few sentences up to a paragraph and are arranged into 34 relevant topics. Few if any preachers of the Word ever have preached the Gospel of the grace of God with greater clarity. Charles Spurgeon was one of the most well-known preachers in the 19th century. Yet more than anything, he desired that all who knew him would desire to know Christ. Before his congregation at the Metropolitan Tabernacle he said to himself, “My soul, never be satisfied within a shadowy Christ.” He points to Philippians 3:10, where Paul says he gave up everything “that I may know [Christ]”; Spurgeon urges all who listen to do likewise.

Surely Charles Spurgeon, one of the most prolific and important preachers of the 1800s, had plenty of reasons to be prideful. In this sermon, however, he notes that “of all creatures in the world the Christian is the last man who ought to be proud”. He knows that if he leaves us unchastised, we will bring upon ourselves misery 10,000 times greater than we will suffer by his slight rebukes and the gentle blows of his hand.
