This book covers a period of a little more than three-quarters of a century. It begins with the first attempt at English colonization in America, in 1576, and ends with the year 1652, when the supremacy of Parliament was recognized throughout the English colonies. The most interesting period in the history of any country is the formative period; and through the mass of recently published original material on America the opportunity to tell its story well has been of late years greatly increased. In the preparation of this work I have endeavored to consult the original sources.

The importance of the volume in the American Nation series is that it includes colonies of the three types which persisted down to the Revolution—the crown colonies, the proprietary colonies, and the three New England charter colonies. On one side the volume emphasizes the variety of conditions and experiments in government. On the other side, it brings out that characteristic that gives the volume its name, the steady determination of the colonists in all three types of colonies to enjoy self-government in internal affairs.

Having the first volume of this series discussed the events, the national developments, and the institutions which preceded the colonization of America, the next step is to describe the land and the people of America as they were found by the Europeans. This volume, therefore, is intended once and for all to set forth the physical conditions of colonization; for within twenty-five years after the discovery, the Spaniards began to penetrate into the interior of North America and encounter the obstacles of rivers and mountains and the sterner opposition of native tribes.

This first volume of the series supplies a needed link between the history of Europe and the history of early America; for whether it came through a Spanish, French, English, Dutch, or Swedish medium, or through the later immigrants from Germany, from Italy, and from the Slavic countries, the American conception of society and of government was originally derived from the European. Hence the importance at the outset of knowing what that civilization was at the time of colonization.

Charles Fontenay's finely crafted The Case of Sunburn brought to audio by Joseph Tabler for your listening enjoyment. The Case of Sunburn is a classic short story from the heyday of the sci-fi digest size magazines, originally published in the April 1957 issue of IF Worlds of Science Fiction. Fontenay (1917-2007) worked for several newspapers, was editor of the Nashville Tennessean, was with the Associated Press and Gannett News Service at one time.

Andrew Jefferson V. Offutt (1934-2013) - Offutt began publishing in 1954 with the story "And Gone Tomorrow" in IF. He was a prolific writer of science-fiction tales, adventure/fantasy (Conan), and erotica/porn (writing as John Cleve and other pseudonyms). He wrote novels in the Thieves World series and many others. "And Gone Tomorrow" is the $1,000 prize-winning story in IF's College Science Fiction Contest...which answers the theme question: "What will life in America be like 100 years from now?"
