Rome under the rule of the ruthless new Emperor Claudius is a dangerous place. Condemned to gladiator school, Marcus Valerius Pavo, the son of a treasonous general, is a celebrated hero following a dramatic victory in the arena. Now he finds himself pitted against one of the greatest gladiators who ever lived: Decimus Cominius Denter. Though Denter has fallen on harder times, he is still a formidable opponent, and it is up to newly decorated Macro to whip him into shape.

While centurions Macro and Cato are returning to Rome from a harrowing campaign against the Parthians, their transport ship is almost capsized by a tidal wave. They barely make it to the port of Matala in Crete, where they are stunned to find a devastated town. An earthquake has struck the island, destroying its cities and killing thousands.

In the first century AD, the Roman Empire faces a new threat from its long-standing enemy Parthia. Parthia is vying with Rome for control of Palmyra an officially neutral kingdom. Palmyra's royal household is on the brink of open revolt, and so a task force under the command of experienced soldiers Macro and Cato is dispatched to defend its king and guard its borders.

In the winter of AD 44, Rome's plan to install a friendly king in the most hostile area of Britannia is facing a new threat. There are rumours of a traitor close to the new king, and a new enemy is gathering strength beyond the marshes. As the king continues with his plans to Romanise his subjects, Horatius Figulus, a junior officer in the Second Legion, is charged with training up the new royal bodyguard. But when a trap is sprung on the Roman army, a secretive Druid sect seizes power and takes the king hostage. Now Figulus must infiltrate the enemy ranks, release the king and track down the elusive leader of the Druids - before the whole of Britannia descends into bloody chaos....

Doch in der Hauptstadt wird der sich ankündigende Schrecken der Kriegsjahre von einer tiefgreifenden Angst überschattet. In den kalten Stunden der Verdunkelung, die die diktatorische Regierung zum Schutz gegen Fliegerangriffe ausspricht, zieht ein brutaler Mörder durch die Metropole. Als die Leiche einer jungen Frau gefunden wird, gerät Kriminalinspektor Horst Schenke unter erbarmungslosen Druck.

Im Kampf der beiden Imperien treten Napoleon und Wellesley zum ersten Mal gegeneinander an.

Fin de l'été de l'an 44 après J.-C. Les légions romaines épuisées par les combats sont dans leur deuxième année de campagne contre les tribus bretonnes. Le commandant de l'armée romaine en Bretagne, le général Plautius, est soumis à la pression de l'Empereur pour qu'il écrase les rebelles une bonne fois pour toutes. Au sein de la fameuse deuxième légion, les centurions Macro et Cato, sous le commandement hasardeux du centurion Maximus, se voient confier la mission de tenir un gué sur la Tamise. Mais Maximus perd son sang-froid au moment critique, permettant au chef ennemi, Caratacos, et à ses hommes de s'échapper.

Im ersten Jahrhundert nach Christus steht nur das kleine Königreich Palmyra zwischen dem römischen Imperium und seinem Erzfeind, dem Reich der Parther. In der hart umkämpften Provinz Britannien entscheidet sich das Schicksal des römischen Imperiums: Die unerschrockene Rebellenführerin Boudica weiß immer mehr Stammeskrieger hinter sich und macht sich auf, Londinium zu erobern. Präfekt Cato wird mit der Mission betraut, die Hauptstadt um jeden Preis zu verteidigen. Während er die Legionen um sich schart, muss er ausgerechnet auf seinen besten Mann Macro verzichten. Er gilt seit der blutigen Schlacht um Camulodunum als vermisst.
