One night Timothy shows up claiming to have been murdered. Now Mellow must help another ghost solve a mystery. At the same time, various businesses have experienced thefts of small, but valuable items. Even the Candle Shoppe is a victim. In investigating Timothy's murder and the many thefts, Mellow is led to the dreaded and haunted Pen Mill's Estate. Can she solve both mysteries before she gets scared out of her wits?

Mellow Summers just wanted to go to college and get her film degree. She moved into a furnished apartment with her friend Jackie only to find that it already had a tenant: the ghost of a girl who was murdered a year earlier. Now it is up to Mellow to not only discover who the murderer is, but to prove it as well. With the help of the ghost Rachel, Mellow sets out to solve the year old mystery. She soon finds out that she may have taken on more than she can handle.

In the distant future the United States has been split into two regions separated by a barren wasteland; this is the country of Dystopia. Here the individual is discouraged, freedom is an illusion, food is rationed, and everything you do is tracked by a chip implanted in your arm. This is Dana Ginary's world.

While working at the Candle Shoppe, a man rushes in demanding to speak to Mel. He tells her that someone is trying to kill him and then drops dead. Though the coroner informs her it was a heart attack, Mel cannot get the man's words out of her head. Soon, she is drawn to an abandoned inn that dates back to 1688 and the legend of Smiley's Ghost. With the help of her friends, Mel explores the abandoned inn and soon finds herself being harassed by a black rider on a horse.
