Jane Austen’s fourth and funniest novel introduces us to many different characters. We learn about their relationships and love life. Emma Woodhouse is a twenty-year-old girl, whose governess, Miss Tylor, has recently married a Mr Weston. Emma takes credit for their marriage and decides that she is naturally gifted in conjuring love matches. This becomes her new hobby and she starts arranging dates for her acquaintances.

Lady Susan is at Churchill, the home of her brother-in-law and his wife and family. Her reputation as a coquette has not been aided by her flirtation with Reginald de Courcy. Lady Susan attempts to further her plans to induce Frederica into marrying Sir James Martin, a nobleman, but Frederica's obvious distaste of the match is a cause for further disruption.

Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma and completed it in August 1816. She died, at age 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December of that year (but dated 1818). Persuasion is linked to Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable city with which Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805.

The Bennet family is in a bit of a jam. With five daughters and no sons, their property is entailed away from their line, and all the women will be largely penniless when their father dies. And so the best way to ensure the most comfortable livelihood for all is for at least one of the five girls to marry “well”, which has their mother’s sharp eye ever seeking a single man in possession of a good fortune. But the Bennet sisters aren’t wholly on board with marrying anyone flung at them.

Lady Susan was first published decades after Austen's death. Written in letters, the selfish but entertaining Lady Susan and each of her correspondents come vividly to life, as do the family members of the fragment, The Watsons. This latter work was begun in 1875, but Austen never returned to it after her father's death.

Romantic scandal, English aristocracy, and familial controversy come together in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice to make for quite the enjoyable listen. As the novel opens, we are introduced to the Bennet Family, whose five daughters have reached the age of marital eligibility. When the dapper (and single) Mr. Bingley and his friend, Mr. Darcy, move into the Bennets' neighborhood, talk in the Bennet house is occupied by musings of engagements, specifically between the eldest daughter, Jane, and Mr. Bingley.

Emma is a vivacious twenty-year-old, who has spent her life in the pleasant seclusion of a village community and who lives with her widowed valetudinarian father. Most of the neighbors admire and approve of her, except for George Knightley, a local landowner, who often expresses his disapproval of Emma’s highhanded and controlling tendencies, in particular her assumption of the unofficial role of matchmaker.

Emma is obliged to return and live with her widowed father, Mr. Watson, after her aunt who raised her contracts a foolish second marriage. She is one of four daughters and two sons who has been better educated than all her sisters by her wealthy aunt.

Full of irony, this comedy of manners satirizes the self-deception of vanity. Emma presents a picture of mixed family and social life as did Pride and Prejudice, though mellowed by a riper humor. Emma equals Pride and Prejudice in its rich humor and vivid portraiture of character. It is a never ending delight in human absurdities, which the fascinated listener shares from chapter to chapter.
