An unabridged reading of this novelisation of a classic 1967 TV adventure featuring the Second Doctor, as played by Patrick Troughton. In the far future, a group of humans is living an idyllic existence on a distant planet. Their colony is run like a gigantic holiday camp, and nothing seems to trouble their carefree existence. When one of them claims that the colony is being invaded by hideous monsters, no one takes him seriously.

The Cybermen make their first ever appearance whilst William Hartnell's Doctor nears the end of his first incarnation, in this classic soundtrack adventure with linking narration by Anneke Wills. The year is 1986, and at the South Pole the crew of the Snowcap Base have detected a new planet on their radar. The arrival of the Doctor, Ben, and Polly at the Base coincides with another landing, that of a spaceship whose humanoid passengers have used cybernetics to replace their limbs and vital organs.

The TARDIS arrives on an extinct volcanic island, beneath which lies a fantastic subterranean world inhabited by the primitive Atlanteans. The Doctor and his companions move from the frying pan to fire when they are rescued, from death at the jaws of hungry sharks, by the mad Professor Zaroff, whose plans involve nothing less than the destruction of the whole world.

Charlotte Pollard's adventures are over. She escaped death aboard the R101 and travelled in time and space - but now in the service of the monolithic, unknowable Viyrans, their unending mission is stifling her. An encounter with would-be adventurer Robert Buchan near the mysterious Ever-and-Ever-Prolixity provides the opportunity Charley needs for escape.... So the adventuress is abroad once more, meeting a lost expedition in uncharted forests, solving enigmas and hoping beyond hope to see the people she misses most: her family.
