Round the Fire was the title of a series of 12 mystery and suspense short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, published monthly in The Strand Magazine between June 1898 and May 1899. The series was popular with contemporary readers, and while some of the individual stories, such as "The Brown Hand", have been regularly anthologised for many years and are well-known, there are some overlooked gems here, too.

The Sign of Four is the second story by Conan Doyle about the exploits of Sherlock Holmes. From the moment Mary Morstan tells Holmes about the mysterious disappearance of her father and the yearly gift of a pearl from an unknown benefactor, Holmes and his companion Watson are involved in an exotic tale of stolen treasure, secret oaths and murder, culminating in a breath-taking chase down the Thames. Holmes is on top form, and Watson falls in love.

Ein angesehener Bankier aus der Londoner City ersucht Holmes um die Aufklärung eines seltsamen Vorfalls: Ein diamantenbesetztes Diadem, das ihm ein Mitglied des englischen Hochadels zur vorübergehenden Verwahrung übergeben hatte, sollte offenbar gestohlen werden. Bei diesem Versuch wurde es jedoch nur stark beschädigt, wobei ein kleiner fehlender Teil tatsächlich verschwunden ist. Zu allem Überdruss hat die Polizei den Sohn des Bankiers in Verdacht.

Während die meisten Abenteuer von Sherlock Holmes durch die Notizen und Publikationen von Dr. John Watson hinlänglich belegt und bekannt sind, gibt es auch eine gewisse Anzahl an Fällen, die der Öffentlichkeit damals geradezu zwingend vorenthalten werden mussten: Insbesondere im beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert hatte Holmes mit einigen höchst ungewöhnlichen Rätseln zu tun, deren Aufklärung gängige wissenschaftliche Anschauungen und normale rdische Zusammenhänge mitunter sprengten.

Sherlock Holmes nennt ihn den König der Erpresser. Sein bürgerlicher Name lautet Charles Augustus Milverton. Eine Klientin beauftragt Holmes, in ihrer Sache zu vermitteln und Milverton zum Einlenken in einem Erpressungsfall zu bewegen. Doch dieser bleibt hart. Für den Meisterdetektiv eine Herausforderung. Er nimmt diese an und stellt sich Milverton zum Duell.

Ein geheimnisvoller Mann mit einer Maske will sich mit Sherlock Holmes treffen. Er will ein kompromittierendes Foto zurückhaben. Sherlock Holmes nimmt den Fall an. Das Foto befindet sich im Besitz einer Frau. Und zwar nicht irgendeiner Frau, sondern der klügsten Frau, die Holmes jemals getroffen hat. Ihr Name: Irene Adler.

Professor von Baumgarten, an expert about mesmerism and spirits, is convinced that the spirit of hypnotized people can leave the body, travel around, and come back at will. For reasons that are unclear, Nicholas Craigie, Captain of the Pole-Star, decides to anchor in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, contrary to the opinion of his crew. Indeed, the boat could be trapped in the ice at any moment, resulting in a sudden death for everyone. One morning Mr. Manson, the second mate, reports he saw a ghost at night. His story is not taken seriously, and is put down to idleness.

John McVittie, a scientist tired of human beings, decides to retire in an isolated cottage on the shores of Scotland so he can work in his laboratory room quietly. During a strong stormy night, a boat named "Archangel" is shipwrecked near his house. Reluctant at first, he consents to see if he can be of any help. He saves the, apparently, only living survivor from the shipwreck...

Mr. Hammond, who is travelling on the American steamer "The Spartan", is suspicious about two passengers after having witnessed their conversation on the deck. They were talking about a secret square box, a mechanism, and the fact that the world will soon hear of it...

Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

Recently unemployed, John Huxford accepts an offer to work at Sheridan & Moore, Montreal in Quebec. He agrees with his fiancée that he will first travel alone to prepare everything for a few weeks before she can join him. Unfortunately, weeks, months pass and she gets no news from John. Sheridan & Moore even say they never saw him in Montreal. Many years pass, and it seems that he has died somewhere or started a new life.
