Ein schwerkranker Mann bittet Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe in einer seltsamen Angelegenheit: Er ist der festen Überzeugung, von drei Hexen verflucht worden zu sein. Holmes und Dr. Watson gehen zwar von einer anderen Erklärung aus, übernehmen jedoch den Fall und reisen nach Eastbourne, um der Sache auf den Grund zu gehen, ehe ihr Klient stirbt.

Dies ist der dritte Band von den neuen Abenteuer des Sherlock Holmes: Über Jahre hinweg begleitete Dr. John H. Watson seinen Freund und Kompagnon Sherlock Holmes bei der Aufklärung einer Vielzahl von Verbrechen und Geheimnissen. Beginnend mit den 1880er Jahren und in das 20. Jahrhundert hineinragend, stellte Holmes seinen Status als brillantester und erfolgreichster Detektiv der Welt immer wieder unter Beweis. Davon zeugen die schriftlichen Notizen Watsons, die dieser gewissenhaft angelegt hat, und in denen von den Abenteuern von Sherlock Holmes erzählt wird.

Inspector Lestrade asks Sherlock Holmes for help when the Chinese owner of an opium cave is murdered in London. Holmes, however, is not in full possession of his detecting skills, and Dr. Watson has to take over at first. At the scene he finds a big mystery.

After a series of attacks on the Ottoman administration in Palestine, Sherlock Holmes receives an order from the British government: he is to travel to Jerusalem with Dr. Watson to track down the disruptors and prevent any further destabilization of the region.

A colleague of Dr. Watson asks Sherlock Holmes for help: His patient Joseph Merrick, known in public as the "elephant man", because of his strong physical deformations, was the victim of a brutal assault. Holmes and Watson take over the case, which takes them to the circus milieu.

Advised to take a day off, Holmes and Watson take a trip to the Royal Parks of Kew Gardens. But life has something else in store for them. Inside the alm house a bizarly placed body was found. The local security manager asks Holmes and Watson for their help. Can they solve the case before Scotland Yard arrives?

It is summer of 1885. The Strauss brothers are staying in London as part of a concert tour. The planned performance in one of the largest concert halls in the Empire is at jeopardy, when a crime occurs involving Johann's violin. His desperate brother Eduard reaches out to Sherlock Holmes for help.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson visit "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show", which is on a big tour through the Empire. During the show, however, one of the Performers, who was acting as Ghost Dog, Chief of the Lakota tribe, mysteriously falls from his horse and succumbs to his injuries. Colonel William F. Cody instructs Holmes to investigate the incident.

8. Genetics: When the Librarian is murdered too, Holmes is at a loss at first. But then he finds a book at the crime scene, with contents that could profoundly question Christian faith.

7. The Librarian: The Confession brings no further clues. After Brother Nicholas promises key information, Holmes and Watson are visiting the impressive and ancient Library.

A few days before Christmas Inspector Lestrade is asking Holmes for assistance in a strange murder case. The extremely challenging and downright dangerous investigation leads them to a catholic abbey in Middlesex, where evil strikes terror into people's hearts.

9. The Questioning: Inspector Lestrade is asking each and every Friar to take part in an interrogation, led by Inspector Lestrade. Holmes and Watson are only asked to assist. However the questioning does not turn out the way the Inspector expected.

4. The Mortal Vessel: Holmes and Watson begin with their investigation. They visit the crime scene, the victims dorm room and inspect the body. In the process Holmes makes a discovery.

6. Confession: A fire erupts in the Chapel, which the Friars are able to extinguish. However, the Confessionals can still take place. Meanwhile Holmes has contact with an important witness.

3. In the Convent: After finally reaching the Redeemer's Abbey, the Abbot welcomes them and promptly fills them in about the gruesome details concerning the murder of Brother Emanuel.

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson reisen nach Deutschland an die Ostsee. Professor Schilling, Holmes früherer Studienkollege, bittet den großen Detektiv um Hilfe. Auf der verbotenen Insel Riems befindet sich eine Forschungsstätte. Eine junge, ambitionierte Ärztin wird früh morgens im dortigen Schweinestall tot aufgefunden, nachdem sie sich mit Professor Schilling am Abend zuvor verabredet hatte. Sie wollte den Professor über eine gefährliche Entdeckung berichten, die sie gemacht hat...
