Story
Billy Budd, a paragon of simple goodness and virile beauty, is press-ganged into the crew of HMS Indomitable in 1797, soon after the mutiny in the British fleet. Billy is popular with everyone on board except Claggart, the master-at-arms, a depraved and wicked man. His malice towards Billy results in a death, a court-martial and an execution at sea.

Story
"Billy è l'ultimo. E Billy Budd è una parabola. In questo discorso in forma di racconto (che, come è noto, fu redatto tra il 1886-1888 e il 1891, anno della morte dell'autore, e uscì nella prima edizione soltanto nel 1924) infatti Billy dà vita alla figura angelicata di colui che sempre e comunque subisce e subirà il torto, l'ingiustizia, la prepotenza, l'illegalità (per dirla melvillianamente, le mire del maligno su questa terra).

Story
Herman Melville, potentially one of America’s most important novelists, wrote White Jacket (published in 1850) based on his experiences serving the US Navy aboard the frigate USS Neversink from 1843 to 1844. White Jacket is considered to be Melville’s most politically charged novel due to its severe criticism of the US Navy and its policies at the time. In fact, the novel helped bring about the end of flogging aboard Naval ships (then a standard practice) due to its graphic and brutal descriptions of the floggings Melville himself witnessed.

Moby Dick, or the Whale

Story
Few things, even in literature, can really be said to be unique — but Moby Dick is truly unlike anything written before or since. The novel is nominally about the obsessive hunt by the crazed Captain Ahab of the book’s eponymous white whale. But interspersed in that story are digressions, paradoxes, philosophical riffs on whaling and life, and a display of techniques so advanced for its time that some have referred to the 1851 Moby Dick as the first “modern” novel.(Summary by Stewart Wills)

Story
Herman Melville August 1, 1819 - September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are "Moby-Dick" (1851); "Typee" (1846), a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia; and "Billy Budd", Sailor, a posthumously published novella. Although his reputation was not high at the time of his death, the 1919 centennial of his birth was the starting point of a Melville revival, and Moby-Dick grew to be considered one of the great American novels.

Story
In those houses which are strictly double houses that is, where the hall is in the middle the fireplaces usually are on opposite sides; so that while one member of the household is warming himself at a fire built into a recess of the north wall, say another member, the former's own brother, perhaps, may be holding his feet to the blaze before a hearth in the south wall the two thus fairly sitting back to back. Is this well? Be it put to any man who has a proper fraternal feeling. Has it not a sort of sulky appearance?
