Este volumen recopila nueve cuentos que la autora escribió entre 1887 y 1910. Si bien Nesbit es más conocida por sus obras de corte infantil, a lo largo de su vida también escribió una gran cantidad de relatos fantasmagóricos y sobrenaturales en los que plasmaba aspectos de su propia vida relacionados con las frustraciones, el miedo y sus deseos. Estos nueve cuentos no solo nos permiten ser testigos de la prosa de Nesbit en un campo que no es el infantil, sino que también suponen una ventana a su alma.

The Mystery of the Semi-Detached was first published in 1893 in E. Nesbit’s “Grim Tales”, a collection of romantic horror stories. A young man is perplexed when his lover fails to show up for a half-clandestine meeting and passes her house on the way home. Upon arrival, he finds the front door ajar and the suburban semi-detached in eerie darkness. Nothing could have prepared him for the sight that awaited him in his sweetheart’s bedroom.

In this series we explore the many facets of love through literary talents that span both time and country. ‘With this ring, I thee Wed’. And with these words lives enter a new chapter. Hopefully till the end of their lives but time together, with its up and downs, hurdles and obstacles, also cuts short a great many, sometimes in unusual ways.

Edith Nesbit was born on the 15th August 1858 in Kennington, then part of Surrey. Nesbit was an active lecturer and prolific writer on socialism but gradually her work for them dwindled as her career as a children’s writer grew. Her most famous success was ‘The Railway Children’ but she was also very prolific and greatly accomplished in poetry, short stories―especially her macabre ghost and supernatural stories―and novels for adults.

Due to the health issues and tuberculosis of her sister Mary, Nesbit’s early life was one of constant changes of house both in England and on the continent. At age 17, Nesbit met Hubert Bland and they married three years later―whilst she was 7 months pregnant. Bland also kept his affair with another woman going throughout their marriage and the two children of that relationship were raised by Nesbit as well as her own three with Bland.
