कलकत्ता के पास बैरकपुर की सैनिक छावनी में 34वीं बंगाल नेटिव इन्फैंट्री की पैदल सेना के सिपाही नंबर 1446 का नाम मंगल पांडे। भारत के पहले स्वातंत्र्य समर की ज्वाला सन् 1857 में उन्हीं के प्रयासों से धधकी। दरअसल 20 मार्च, 1857 को सैनिकों को नए प्रकार के कारतूस दिए गए। उन कारतूसों को मुझेहाँह में दाँतों से दबाकर खोला जाता था। वे गाय और सूअर की चरबी से चिकने किए गए थे, ताकि हिंदू और मुसलिम सैनिक धर्म के प्रति अनुराग छोड़कर धर्मविमुख हों।
