Under the shadow of gray clouds, three children venture into the woods, where they spot the corpse of an old man on a scaffold. Suddenly a wild figure emerges, with long fingernails and tangled hair. It is the Hattak fullih nipi foni, the bone picker, who comes to tear off rotting flesh with his fingernails. Only the Choctaws who adhere to the old ways will speak of him. The frightening bone picker is just one of many entities, scary and mysterious, who lurk behind every moment of this spine-tingling collection of Native fiction, written by award-winning Choctaw author Devon A. Mihesuah.

Gathered together for the very first time, these often hard to find tales include "Grass Dancer," a Nebula Award Nominee for best short story of the year. The collection includes the first four chapters of the forthcoming novel "Coyote Rage", the first book in a trilogy featuring shape-shifters, talking animals, giants, Little People and a horde of other critters and people from Native American history and folklore.

They are: "The Story of Coyote, Buffalo, and the Rock", told by the Sioux, a tribe from the Northwest, where they once formed the Great Sioux Nation, in the area that later became the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming.

But as we soon learn, Ruby’s story is far more complex than even she can imagine.

Fort Mojave, CA—Ft. Mojave citizens woke horrified this morning to learn that they discovered nineteen bodies in a nearby compound. The alleged victims are possibly members of a religious cult known for mass suicides. Investigations are ongoing. FBI Agent Nash Running Bear has more important things to focus on than the daily media frenzy. That is, until her work takes her to Fort Mojave, and an anonymous caller on a talk radio, claims that what appears to be a suicide pact is actually something much worse—a mass murder.
