Le 24 novembre 1859 paraît à Londres "L'Origine des espèces par le moyen de la sélection naturelle, ou la préservation des races favorisées dans la lutte pour la vie". L'auteur du livre, Charles Darwin (1809-1882), est un naturaliste de cinquante ans qu'un voyage autour du monde particulièrement riche en découvertes et l'œuvre originale édifiée à sa suite ont déjà fait connaître largement en Angleterre et en Europe continentale. C'est ce livre toutefois qui fera de son auteur le plus célèbre penseur de l'histoire naturelle qu'ait connu le monde depuis Buffon, et le principal bâtisseur - après Lamarck - , du transformisme moderne ou théorie de l'évolution des espèces vivantes.

The evolutionary process as explained in the Human Phenomenon, a new edition of de Chardin's The Phenomenon of Man (1065 English edition), as edited and translated from the French 1955 edition by Sarah Appleton Weber in 1999, is categorized under four parts: prelife, life, thought, and superlife.
