കേരളത്തിലെ സാമൂഹികചരിത്രത്തിലെ സുപ്രധാന ഏടാണ് വിമോചനസമരം. അത് ദേശീയതലത്തിലും പ്രാദേശികതലത്തിലും നിരവധി പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. നവോത്ഥാനത്തിന്റെയും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരത്തിന്റെയും ചരിത്രഭൂമികയില്‍ ജാത്യാഭിമാനം മരണാസന്നമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ, മരിച്ചില്ല, ജാതിക്കു മരണമില്ല. പുരോഗമനശക്തികളുടെ ഉയിര്‍പ്പിന്റെയും വാഴ്‌വിന്റെയും കാലത്ത് ജാതി പതുങ്ങിക്കിടന്നു. വിമോചനസമരം അതിനെ ഉണര്‍ത്തിയെടുത്തു. ജാതി പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മൃതസഞ്ജീവനിയാകാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നതാണ് വിമോചനസമരത്തിന്റെ ഫലശ്രുതി.

കേരളത്തിന്റെയും രാഷ്ട്രീയ സാമൂഹിക ചരിത്രപഠനത്തില്‍ ഒഴിവാക്കാനാകാത്ത ഗ്രന്ഥം. ഒപ്പംതന്നെ രാജ്യം മറ്റൊരു അടിയന്തരാവസ്ഥയുടെ വക്കിലാണെന്ന മട്ടിലുള്ള സമകാലീന രാഷ്ട്രീയ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിലയിരുത്തലും നടത്തുന്നു.

കര്‍ഷകകലാപം, സാമുദായികകലാപം, വര്‍ഗ്ഗീയലഹള, ജന്മിത്വവിരുദ്ധകലാപം, ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ആധിപത്യത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള കലാപം എന്നിങ്ങനെ 1921-'22 കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ മലാറില്‍ നടന്ന പോരാട്ടങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് വിവിധ വ്യാഖ്യാനങ്ങളുണ്ട്, വസ്തുതകളുടെയും രേഖകളുടെയും അടിസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ ആ പോരാട്ടങ്ങളെ വിവരിക്കുകയാണ് പ്രശസ്ത ചരിത്ര പണ്ഡിതനായ എം. ഗംഗാധരന്‍.
