Las noches de Reikiavik ocultan más miserias de las que se ven a simple vista. En una vivienda céntrica de la capital islandesa han encontrado el cadáver de un hombre joven en medio de un enorme charco de sangre. A pesar de lo espectacular de la escena del crimen, no parece haber signos de violencia en el apartamento. Detective Sigurdur Oli is in trouble. After a school reunion exposes the chasm between his life and those of his much more successful contemporaries, leaving him bitter and resentful, one of his old friends asks him to pay an unofficial visit to a couple of blackmailers. He readily agrees, only to arrive to find one of the pair lying in a pool of blood. When the victim dies in hospital, Sigurdur Oli is faced with investigating a murder without revealing his own reasons for being present at the murder scene.

When a travelling salesman is found murdered in a basement flat, killed by a bullet from a Colt .45, the police initially suspect a member of the Allied occupation force. L'Américain se conduit comme un enfant capricieux et a de multiples exigences, le Russe est sympathique. Il a seulement préféré loger à l'hôtel plutôt qu'à la maison des syndicats, où voulait l'accueillir le Parti Communiste islandais. Pourquoi ?

Une jeune femme attend son fiancé à Petsamo, au nord de la Finlande. Ils doivent rentrer en Islande pour fuir la guerre qui vient d'éclater dans les pays nordiques, mais le jeune homme n'arrive pas. Au printemps 1943, dans une Islande occupée par les troupes alliées, la découverte d'un corps rejeté par la mer sème l’émoi à Reykjavik. Au même moment, un jeune homme est victime d’une agression d’une sauvagerie inouïe non loin d’un bar à soldats, et une femme qui fréquente avec assiduité les militaires disparaît brusquement.

Un représentant de commerce est retrouvé dans un petit appartement de Reykjavik, tué d'une balle de colt et le front marqué d'une croix gammée dessinée avec son sang. Rapidement les soupçons portent sur les soldats étrangers qui grouillent dans la ville en cet été 1941. Deux jeunes gens sont chargés des investigations : Flovent, le seul enquêteur de la police criminelle d'Islande, ex-stagiaire à Scotland Yard, et Thorson, l'Islandais né au Canada, désigné comme enquêteur par les militaires parce qu'il est bilingue.

Arnaldur Indridason, maître du thriller islandais, nous entraîne cette fois dans une histoire singulière se déroulant au XVIIe siècle en Islande : la rencontre insolite entre le roi du Danemark et un horloger.

Dans une banlieue de Reykjavik, au cours d'une fête d'anniversaire, un bébé mâchouille un objet qui se révèle être un os humain. Le commissaire Erlendur et son équipe arrivent et découvrent sur un chantier un squelette enterré là, soixante ans auparavant. Cette même nuit, Eva, la fille d'Erlendur, appelle son père au secours sans avoir le temps de lui dire où elle est. Il la retrouve à grand-peine dans le coma et enceinte.
