Toon Lore Done Right: A Black cartoon, anime and animation podcast

By: David Hughes
  • Summary

  • The primary mission is to give a brief history of animation, talk about the impact it's had on my life and, whenever possible, illuminate the black and brown people and characters that make these shows possible. In each episode of Toon Lore Done Right (TLDR) I, your host Dave, take a film, tv show, character, or concept in animation to give you a brief yet detailed history on it. As a blerd, anime fan,and student of all things animation and a graduate from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) I hope to spark discussion while giving my personal insight. • Dragon Ball and Beyond: My tribute to Akira Toriyama the legend
    Mar 10 2024

Hey there, it's been a while, hasn't it? I know I've been on a bit of a hiatus from the podcast, and I'm not fully back yet, but I couldn't let this moment pass without sharing something that's been weighing heavily on my heart. You see, recently we lost a true legend in the world of manga: Akira Toriyama. His passing hit me hard, harder than I expected, and I knew I had to take a moment to honor his memory.

So, here I am, no scripts, no rehearsing, just me talking straight from the heart. This episode might be a bit rough around the edges, but I couldn't let this sensitive time slip by without expressing how much Toriyama's work has meant to me over the years. From Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball z, Dragon Ball Super, Sand Land, Dragon Quest and even GT, his creations have helped shaped my life and influenced my love for storytelling in ways I can't fully express. In fact it was my love for Dragon ball z that pushed me to even start podcasting!

Recording this episode has been tough, to say the least. There's a heaviness in my chest as I speak, knowing that Toriyama's absence will be felt deeply in the world of manga. But amidst the sadness, I find solace in the fact that his legacy lives on through his incredible body of work. So here's to you, Akira Toriyama, thank you for everything. Your impact will never be forgotten.

  • Justice League the Animated Series 20th anniversary
    Nov 24 2021

Welcome to Toon Lore Done Right! Today, Dave the Tutor dives into the wonderful history of Justice League the animated series. Driven by creative minds like Bruce Timm and the late great Dwayne McDuffie, see how they and the voice talent really brought this classic show to life. With characters like superman, batman, wonder woman, martian man hunter, hawk girl and john stewart green lantern, its difficult to think that this show ever had its struggles. But we see that writing for such an iconic team can be difficult even for the people who had already successfully launched the Batman, superman, batman beyond and static shock animated series.
