Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the Psalms are often concerned with our experience of God as creatures made in his image called to rule over this good world. The Psalms assume that your relationship with God is fractured. They were written in the context of the biblical story in which we were made by a holy God, we have rebelled against him in selfish sin, and we need forgiveness. The Psalms prepare us to meet our God on holy ground as we kneel in humility and ask for mercy.

The Psalms are pledges of allegiance to God. They are declarations of our desire to be aligned with God and no one else. When the world says, “I reject God,” the psalms give us language to plant our flag in the ground and say, “I am his, and he is mine. I belong to the Lord.”
