  • Parent Carer Trauma with Dr Joanna Griffin | S4 | E18
    Jan 8 2025

New Year, New Us - or not. The Skies We’re Under is kicking off 2025 with the brilliant Dr. Jo Griffin, a parent carer and counselling psychologist who is going to help us understand why some of this is so flippin' hard even when our children are bloomin brilliant.

Jo covers what trauma is and why trauma is so common in parent carers, what support is needed, and why traditional forms of support may hinder rather than help. Full of support and guidance for parent carers, and advice for practitioners with where to go for resources, and everything we can do to be properly trauma-informed.

Rachel, Lucy and Sarah also reflect on how the themes touch them in their personal and professional lives, and how they can provide more understanding of their own experiences, and also help connect with other parents going through similar stories.

You can find out more about Joanna here.

Affinity Hub resources are available here.

You can also find Joanna’s book ‘Day by Day’ here.

The parent carer trauma discussion paper can be found here.

Mrs Chapman

This podcast is everything I’ve wanted to hear for years. Hearing parents in a similar position validating the emotions we feel, situations we’ve lived through and most of all it made me REALLY laugh. Well done to all. It can’t be easy finding time in your lives to put this together but it’s made my days brighter and I can’t wait for another season.

Absolutely brilliant

I have laughed, I have cried, I have felt seen and heard. I had no idea how complicated life raising a disabled child is until I was unexpectedly in this situation.
I feel less alone, inspired by those that have been doing this for longer and more informed about what support my child is entitled to vs what I am told by "professionals".
A must listen for anyone connected to SEND and even for those wanting to understand the human experience more broadly.
