  • Summary

  • Discover a largely overlooked chapter of history with a new podcast series on the persecution of queer people under National Socialism! Ten students from Germany and Poland came together for a summer school at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial to explore this neglected topic. Through research, consultations with historians, and archival materials, they’ve created powerful podcast episodes that offer personal insights into the lives of queer individuals during and after the Nazi regime. These episodes, while not academic, fill a vital gap in queer history, shedding light on stories of lesbian victims, the targeting of transgender individuals, and the post-war struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. Tune in to hear these moving accounts and help bring this marginalized history into focus. The summer school “Remembrance Podcasts: Persecution of queer people under National Socialism” was realised by Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V. in cooperation with GFPS-Polska. The project is funded by the EVZ Foundation and the Federal Foreign Office as part of the programme YOUNG PEOPLE remember international. • Episode 5 - The rocky way to commemoration and homosexual activist groups in the GDR
    Nov 1 2024

“Remembering means being annoying without end!” Albert Eckert, civil rights activist.

Remembering queer victims of the Nazi regime has been a path of struggle and ongoing conflict up to today. This episode will explore the hostile, unbearable continuation of the criminalisation of homosexuality in both German states after the war. It will highlight the brave voices of survivors who were persecuted under Paragraph 175, and the rise of homosexual activist groups in the GDR in the 1980s who fought for the recognition of queer victims.
