Part 1 of James Bond Sidecars: Roger Moore

Rare Cuts Media Society dives headfirst into a new theme and the 1978 film "The Wild Geese"—a hidden cinematic gem where Bond is not quite Bond, but still acts a whole lot like him. Assigned to explore the non-Bond roles of James Bond actors, this episode spotlights Sir Roger Moore as a sly mercenary pilot on a secret mission in southern Africa, alongside a star-studded (for the time) cast including Richard Burton and Richard Harris. The crew unpacks the film’s wild ride: from its unique "Bond-adjacent" opening credits—geese and all—to its transition from snappy British drama to full-on mercenary war movie, all underscored by a soundtrack more circus than suspense. With wit and humor, the hosts pick apart everything from the film’s questionable production choices (was that a sword fight or slapstick?) to the convoluted motivations behind its high-stakes rescue plot. Along the way, they debate the merits of “realistic” war films, 1970s British cinema quirks, and whether the so-called "all-star" cast still packs a punch today. From behind-the-scenes trivia—including Roger Moore’s reluctance to share lines with heavyweights Burton and Harris—to speculation about a modern-day remake (yes, Willem Dafoe gets a mention), this episode has it all: nostalgia, critique, and the kind of side-splitting banter you’ve come to expect from Rare Cuts. Stick around as the hosts give "The Wild Geese" their newly expanded scoring treatment and preview what’s next on their James Bond sidecar journey. Don’t miss it!

    May 29 2025

In this mini episode, We kick off a new theme! Rare Cuts Media Society takes a break from the usual hidden media gems to launch into the world of suave spies and shaken martinis. But instead of discussing the iconic James Bond films themselves, the team takes on “James Bond Sidecars”—lesser-known works from the actors who’ve played 007 over the years: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, and Timothy Dalton. With a playful dice roll, each host is randomly assigned one of the Bond actors to explore, uncovering rare and obscure movies outside of the famous franchise. Expect plenty of banter, creative games of chance, and a few chips (both literal and metaphorical) thrown into the mix. First up, Andrew sets the stage for a series of fun and surprising deep cuts from the men behind Bond. Tune in to hear which unexpected gems—and perhaps a few duds—the hosts discover in this Bond-themed side adventure!

Part 4 of Rowdy Roddy Piper

In this installment, your hosts Andrew, Rob, Mike Ross, and Eric set out to unearth another hidden media gem—this time diving into the lesser-known corners of wrestler-turned-actor Roddy Piper’s film career. With Mike’s pick of the episode, the group shifts focus to the independent Canadian film "Clear Lake" (2012), reflecting on why Piper gravitated toward indie projects later in his career and how those roles may have resonated more deeply with his personal experiences. Together, the hosts swap stories of their limited exposure to Piper’s filmography beyond cult classics like "They Live" and "Hell Comes to Frogtown," sharing humorous anecdotes about wrestling cameos, forgotten action co-stars, and even a Cyndi Lauper music video. Join the Rare Cuts crew as they dissect Piper’s journey from over-the-top wrestling performances to nuanced indie work, and debate whether the rowdy one finally found a role—and a filmmaking community—that fit just right.
