• Episode 8: Changing World Reprise
    Dec 11 2024

All first acts must end on a cliffhanger. This is also true for Act One's finale for Pride and Prejudice - The Musical. I’m Josie Brown, the librettist. With Emmy-award winning composer - We discuss how she conceived it as a reprise to CHANGING WORLD — and why she felt it should be sung by the Bennet family, instead of, like the original, sung by the two sets of lovers, Mr. Bingley and Jane and Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.

On our next podcast, we’ll be listening to one of my all-time favorite songs in the musical: Being Married, a duet by Charlotte and Mr. Collins. It is also Act 2 opening number, and considering our audience’s ecstatic receptions, deservedly so.

  • Episode 7: In Charlotte Lucas's Imagination
    Jun 30 2024

In a town as small as Meryton, it’s every woman of a marrying age for herself. Now, add to that you’re competing with four beauties from one household alone — The Bennet sisters, Jane, Elizabeth, Kitty and Lydia (notice I didn’t include sweet, plain Mary in that line-up — and every other gal in town has to work doubly hard on her flirting and feminine wiles.

Then you have Charlotte Lucas. Moving quickly toward her prime, even sporting a title won’t get her what she wants: a husband. Or will it?

In this episode of Pride and Prejudice the Musical Podcast, Librettist Josie Brown asks Lyricist-Composer Rita Abrams to explain how she came up with lyrics for Charlotte’s solo, “In My Imagination,” that are both hilarious and poignant, yet explain the spinster's dilemma so succinctly.

Love. Longing. And relations that can be liabilities. All of these issues play into Composer-Lyricist Rita Abram’s song, sung by the four leads of Pride and Prejudice the musical: ELIZABETH BENNET, JANE BENNET, CHARLES BINGLEY, AND FITZWILLIAM DARCY. This is Josie Brown, Librettist of Pride and Prejudice the Musical. In this episode, I have the joy of interviewing Rita about her process for putting the myriad feelings of this quartet in harmony.

On our next podcast, we’ll be listening to one of my all-time favorite songs in the musical: Being Married, a duet by Charlotte and Mr. Collins. It is also Act 2 opening number, and considering our audience’s ecstatic receptions, deservedly so.

  • Episode 5: A Husband
    Jan 12 2024

    Connive, Contrive, and Plot.

You’d think this describes the villain of a play, wouldn’t you?

Instead, this is how Mrs. Bennet in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE THE MUSICAL describes her role in marrying off five daughters with no entailed estate and minuscule dowries.

But when her beautiful eldest, Jane, catches the eye of the rich and eligible Charles Bingley Rita Abrams’ song, “A HUSBAND,” — sung by this always anxious mother — aptly sums up her scheme to ensure that Jane’s visit to at Charle’s sister’s behest doesn’t end until Charles returns home.

In this episode, Josie Brown, the librettist of Pride and Prejudice - the Musical, and Rita Abrams, the musical's composer-lyricist, siscuss the emotion and nuances that Rita so brilliantly embedded in the song for some lucky actress to sing.

And, in the productions it has had so far, it's been a showstopper.

(This version is sung by the incomparable Bettina Devlin.)

On our next episode of Pride and Prejudice - The Musical Podcast, Rita and I will discuss  A CHANGING WORLD, the quartet sung by the show’s leads: Elizabeth, Darcy, Jane, and Bingley.

  • Episode 4: Assembly Ball Buzz
    Dec 3 2023

Gossip set to music? How delicious! It’s what composer-lyricist Rita Abrams does in THE ASSEMBLY BALL BUZZ, Song 4 of Pride and Prejudice - the Musical.

Its librettist, Josie Brown, discusses with Rita her goals with this song, how and why dialogue is interspersed between its stanzas, and why it encapsulates the emotions of its main characters so brilliantly.

At the end of the episode, you will also hear the whole song.

On our next episode of Pride and Prejudice - The Musical Podcast, Rita and I will break down Mrs. Bennet's showstopper, "A HUSBAND." It's our take on why some lucky actress of a certain age always gets a standing ovation -- and possibly an award nomination.

  • Episode 2: It Is a Truth
    Aug 11 2023

Those familiar with Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, will recognize its very first line of narration: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." In the second episode of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE - THE PODCAST, librettist Josie Brown and lyricist-composer Rita Abrams discuss how they bring this phrase to life in the second song in their musical, and why it comes out as a duet between Darcy and Bingley -- with snide asides from Bingley's sister, Caroline.

In other episodes to follow, Rita and Josie discuss their creative process with each of the songs and how Jane Austen’s wonderful book inspired the placement, pace, and lyrics in this musical.
