About this listen

An immersive audio series about the dreamscape of modern masculinity, for the perplexed gent - and anyone who knows one.

The world our fathers and grandfathers grew up in has gone. The old model of masculinity is dead. But what does the new model look like? Man men are trying to work this out.

Most men aren’t Man 1.0. But they’re not quite Man 2.0, either. They’re somewhere in-between, muddling along, doing their best. This series is about what that’s like. It’s about the new demands – and the old sticking points. It’s about the new freedoms – and the old insecurities.

Written and narrated by Max Dickins (comedian; author of Billy No Mates) with original sound design by Rich Le Gate, Inbetween Man is an irreverent, thought-provoking guide to modern manhood.

What makes a man ‘successful’ now? And who gets to decide? In this opening chapter of The InBetween Man, Max reflects on what sort of bloke he aspires to be, taking the scenic route via Lynx Africa, Nuts magazine, and Jamie Oliver’s moped. He also meets Fernando Desouches, Managing Director of advertising agency New Macho, who explains: ‘Success is to men what beauty is to women.’ But what does he mean?

Why is it that blokes fantasise about having a ‘man cave’? Or that so many guys like nothing more than tending to their allotment? Or tinkering in the garage? Or building their model railway? And why do men spend so long in the toilet? We don’t shy away from any of the big issues as we explore men’s relationship with solitude. Plus, you'll meet Shed of the Year winner - and all-round renaissance man - Joel Bird, who explains why a shed is more than a place for men to store their lawn mower: it is crucial for their mental health. Genuinely.

While books, podcasts, talks on modern femininity are abundant, there is comparatively little content on modern masculinity. This audio series offers an honest and well-thought-out exploration of how many of us "in-between men" feel. In a short and engaging format, it raises the questions lingering at the edges of our minds—questions we often hesitate to ask or discuss openly.

Max’s willingness to voice these concerns creates an opportunity for all of us to realize that we are not alone. More importantly, it encourages much-needed conversations about what modern masculinity means. If we don’t take the initiative to define it ourselves, "men 2.0" may never emerge.

This series feels like the beginning of a new chapter—one that could help us shape and embrace a redefined masculinity.
