About this listen

Gimme Three is a love letter to one of the most powerful mediums of artistic expression—a love letter to the films that moved us and to the great experiences we've had watching them.
In each episode, hosts Nicholas Ybarra and Bella Efstratis (and frequent special guests) will pick three incredible movies based on a selected theme.

The Gimme Three podcast aims to encourage people to return to the theater and expand their watch lists through fun banter and passionate analysis.

  • Gregg Araki's Teen Apocalypse Trilogy
    Jun 16 2025

This week, Bella is joined by special guests Melia and Henry Chendo to celebrate Pride with a look at Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy:

    • Totally F***ed Up (1993)
    • The Doom Generation (1995)
    • Nowhere (1997)

A trailblazer of New Queer Cinema, Araki captured the chaos of queer youth in the ’90s like no one else. These films are loud, sexy, surreal, and devastating — soaked in color, contradiction, and emotion.

In this episode, we talk about his portrayal of the queer experience through his signature thematic and aesthetic style — how he balances camp comedy with emotional darkness, and how sex, love, drugs, violence, and warped reality all collide in his stories.

There’s a constant tension in these films between disconnection and desire, between the feeling of being completely lost and the desperate need to be seen. Araki doesn’t offer clean resolutions or easy answers — his stories unravel in fragments, in bursts of color and chaos. Still, somewhere in the wreckage, he makes room for vulnerability, longing, and the aching need to be understood.

    Happy Pride! 🌈

  • 77 - The View Askewniverse - Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma
    Jun 9 2025

To celebrate the re-release of Dogma (which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary), Bella and Nick took a field trip to see the Kevin Smith classic on the big screen. We were joined by our good friend and returning guest, Max Sopkin.

The trio discusses their theater experience and does a deep dive on Kevin Smith’s early career work.

    • First up, we explore the industry-shaking “little movie that could: " the foul-mouthed and wildly hilarious cult classic Clerks.
    • Second, we explore the deeper recesses of Kevin Smith’s romantic side in the unique romantic comedy Chasing Amy.
    • Lastly, it’s Dogma: Resurrected! Max and Nick discuss how formative this movie was for them growing up, and Bella reviews her thoughts seeing the film for the first time.

Let us know what you think of these films and your favorite Kevin Smith picture.

  • 76 - Sinister Beaches: The Dark Side of Paradise
    Jun 2 2025

This week, we’re heading to the shore—but not for the sunshine. Returning guest Michel Eljaiek joins co-host Bella Efstratis to explore the darker side of paradise through three beach-set thrillers that reveal just how quickly bliss can turn into terror.

    • First up is Old (2021), M. Night Shyamalan’s eerie tale of a secluded beach where visitors age rapidly, confronting the horror of time and mortality.
    • Then it’s The Beach (2000), Danny Boyle’s cult favorite starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a backpacker who discovers an idyllic island commune that slowly unravels into something far more sinister.
    • And finally, there’s the low-budget hidden gem The Sand (2015), where a group of spring breakers wake up to find the beach itself has turned against them—thanks to a flesh-eating organism lurking just beneath the surface.

From body horror to environmental dread, we dive into how each film uses the beach to explore humanity’s desire to escape pain, chase pleasure, and preserve a state of bliss—no matter the cost. These movies may look like vacation films on the surface, but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find something far more disturbing.
