About this listen

Twenty-five years after that first death and the suicides continue. Three alone in the time we’ve been making this series. The story that started on an island returns to an island, the Love Island. Jacques investigates the UK TV industry’s attempt to grapple with the human cost of reality TV and whether, in the end, it’s all smoke and mirrors.

This episode contains strong language and discussions around mental health and suicide which some listeners may find upsetting. If you feel affected by any of the themes in the show please visit the show page for the series where you will find links to organisations that can help you.

I was absolutely gripped by this from the very start. All programmes I’ve watched and loved that I now see in a completely different light.

Never liked reality tv and this podcast tells why: manipulation of vulnerable participants chosen precisely because their vulnerability makes good viewing. All that is wrong with the current media landscape is brought together in this podcast. If you need a reason to stop watching reality tv, then look no further

Unreality tv uncovered

This is very interesting and while there are no massive surprises it does make one question ones own role as a viewer in perpetuating behaviours and also the amount of blame on social media. As with the producers he is exposing though, Peretti has his own agenda and has obviously chosen his interviewees and edited their stories to emphasise that they are victims. Of course the production teams have a duty of care that should be properly carried out and‘participants’ should be paid for some of the huge profits they draw in but they also need to take some personal responsibility if they have not researched what previous shows were like or read the contracts they are signing.

Interesting but

Really interesting and insightful. Only flaw is the theme tune that made my ears bleed!

Great series

I’ve never really been one to watch reality TV as I saw it as quite toxic without knowing all of this stuff that went on behind the scenes which makes it so much worse!
A very good insight which will hopefully shed more light on the issues that need addressing before any other people suffer like so many other contestants have.

A Massive Eye Opener

everyone, yes EVERYONE, should listen to this podcast. There is something VERY wrong with the TV we are consuming, and reality TV is the very worst of it. of all TV formats reality TV is most deserving of being banned.

this is a fantastic podcast.

I think this is what we all already knew but somehow laid bare in this way makes for interesting listening. Great podcast.

Fascinating, slightly terrifying. I'm not a huge fan of reality TV, and even less so now!!
