  • Meet BSE’s Turnaround Man
    Nov 27 2024

When Sundaraman Ramamurthy became the chief of Bombay Stock Exchange, he found an organisation that was almost on the brink of irrelevance. He found highly dwindled cash market share, no opening in equity derivatives and a heap of operational issues.

Could he “make the elephant dance?” is the question many asked.

But from there, Ramamurthy led a remarkable turnaround of the bourses with a mix of strategic initiatives and basic steps: painstakingly going to hundreds of brokers and asking them what would make them start trading again. While issues still persist, especially in segments such as F&O, Ramamurthy has calm, tactical plans to tide over them.

In the final episode of “ET Wealth and Beyond” ET’s markets editor Nishanth Vasudevan talks to Ramamurthy on the story of BSE’s resurgence, the strategy driving this transformation, and its future amidst evolving regulatory frameworks.
