Comfort, Comfort Ye My People

  • Summary

  • The prophet writes to exiles in Isaiah 40:1, “Comfort, comfort My people.” Gone is the scornful “this people” of Isaiah 6:9; rather, the herald declares “My people!” These words explode with comfort, for they reflect God’s covenant promise at Sinai, “I will be your God, and you will be My people” (Exodus 6:7). Comfort comes in Isaiah 40:1 and pictorially in the words of Isaiah 40:11, “He will tend His flock like a Shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms; He will carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.”
