The Beauty in Men's Clothing was first serialized in 1932, then published in novel form in 1933. Authored by Muramatsu Shofu, and inspired by Japanese military officer Tanaka Ryukichi, it is a fictionalization of crossdressing, bisexual Manchu “princess” Kawashima Yoshiko, who worked as a spy for the Japanese. The novel, though it follows a fictionalMariko, was eventually used as evidence of Yoshiko's treason in their trial. Out of copyright in Japan, this podcast is a reading of Chapter 1, as translated by Google Translate.
