Der Erzähler und sein Schulfreund Arnold Zipper sind als Heimkehrer aus dem Krieg gleichgültig geworden. Der Roman spielt im ersten Viertel des 20. Jahrhunderts in Wien und auch in Berlin sowie in Monte Carlo.
