London, September 1941. For plucky, determined Emmy Lake, working at Woman’s Friend magazine has become everything she dreamed, especially since the departure of the magazine’s formidable editor, Henrietta Bird. Now Emmy really can get on and Do Her Bit.

When the Ministry of Information calls on Woman’s Friend to help recruit female supporters to the war effort, Emmy is thrilled, but soon she and best friend Bunty meet a young woman who shows them the real challenges that women war workers face. Suddenly Emmy must tackle a life-changing dilemma: should she carry out her duty or stand by her friends?

Highlights the everyday lives of women (like Dear Mrs Bird) but this time centres on factory workers, “doing their bit.” The problem experienced by many women, was that they needed childcare to cover their round the clock shifts and management thought that they were troublemakers. This was despite the fact that the government had offered to create nurseries for these women. Fascinating and an issue I hadn’t thought about before.
Emmy takes on more responsibility at Women’s Friend, championing the factory women’s cause. On her way she makes new friends and keeps the old, ruffling the feathers of unsympathetic men along the way.
Beautifully read by Anna Popplewell.

Definitely cheerful, mainly

Just like Dear Mrs Bird, this is totally jolly hockey sticks but with such substance. The characters show immense resilience and caring and I love the determination, strength and overall good natured positivity.

This is a very good book and the narrator is sublime taking us back in time, showing us the difficulties faced by women taking on mens roles. It also returns us to the time when opinions were voiced with grace and charm whilst still being forceful, instead of the awful aggression used on social media nowadays. Gentle but determined and stoic… thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking.

Full of grace and courage

A very successful sequel although it can be read independently of the first book, Dear Mrs Bird.

I really enjoyed listening to this. The characters are relatable and you get a feeling of camaraderie, war time spirit and the devotion of good friendships.

Highly recommended.
