About this listen

They say you should choose your friends wisely - and sometimes they choose you.

Plagued by her family and school bullies, Cassie Reilly's only place of solace was the garden shed. Hiding away from the world, she could pretend all was well until her stepfather's violence spilled out of the house and threatened to destroy everything she held dear. Unwilling to remain in the shadows and watch an innocent girl beaten, the silent occupant at the bottom of the garden arose. In that moment, Cassie had two choices: be afraid of the unknown or befriend them. With friendships scarce, she gladly accepted what was offered, little realising how that choice would save her during some truly dark times...

A great little story, with hard themes. Different but entertaining. The narrator is smooth and reads this novella brilliantly and Alexia Muelle-Rushbrook shows what a great storyteller she is.

Brilliant!

Really enjoyed this dark coming of age tale by Alexia Muelle-Rushbrook. It's a hard listen at times due to the abuse the main character, Cassie, receives, but it's done well and never gratuitous. The story held my interest, kept me wondering where it was going to end up and the conclusion wasn't what I was expecting but was very satisfying. Amy Hutchins is great again reading the audiobook (she also read 'They call me Angel' by the same author).

An entertaining coming-of-age story about a young girl from a disfunctional family. Bullied and tormented at school, she learns to find solace in her secret hideaway, the garden shed. But the shed holds a strange secret. Gripping story, which flows well and has a surprising twist at the end. Recommended.

Entertaining, with a great twist

This is another beautifully written story by Alexia Muelle-Rushbrook. A quick read but what a rollercoaster of emotions!
Cassie has to grow up quick. Feeling like a misfit and bullied by her peers on top of a very disfunctional family unit, she soon develops a keen survival mechanism in which her friend YOU is always there for her, just when she needs it the most.
The pace of this book is perfect. Once you start on Cassie's journey you can't put the book down. I read it in one go and carried on going over the story in my head for days.
Again, very credible characters from Alexia, well developed, you can empathise with and even relate to. A very easy 5stars to this book.

And a 5 stars to Amy Hutchinson for her beautiful reading. she succeeds in giving each character their own voice.

Compelling read
